In Tassie forget the Minis and get a rental. No point in killing a good car on the lap of the West coast.

Matty,

at Launceston airport there is a car hire place called "Red Spot Car Hire" or something like that . . . and for the price of a gutless hyundai from the major rental companies you can get a large or medium sized car that is actually comfortable to drive . . . the cars are a year or 2 old with about 30,000kms on the clock generally and quite clean . . . just inspect it before you drive away for scrapes and the like and make sure they are all on the rental sheet.

 How long you going to be about and where :?:

Cheers Scott

Matty, there is a place in Tassie somewhere that hires Pink mokes... I saw them on my holiday back when I was on my schoolies trip at the end of 2008.

Worth looking them up. They had a whole fleet of them.. Looked in great condition and lots of fun too.

Matt, are you going to put this topic on the moke forum, I'm sure some of the Tassie mob would like to catch up with you.

Where are the pink hire mokes, never seen or heard of them.

Matt, the people at Poatina used to have mini hire, but I don't know if they still do it.
It even featured on getaway a few years ago.
It is run by Fusion, a bit alternative, and is about 45mins or so from Launie.

suggest you contact them.

They do not rent Mini's anymore. Went out of buisness about 5 years ago.

I used to do all the repairs and servicing for the fleet, it went belly up not long after I left.

I remember we gave Catriona Rowntree the best car we had for free at the time, thinking it would be great free advertising on Getaway. Although I've heard people talk about it since, I don't think there was a single booking directly from being on the show.

Was another in Launceston hiring minis only, I thought it might have been Cameron's Car Hire but that was 10 years ago at least. He had about half a dozen clubbys.

It may have seemed a good thing, BUT...
I used to have to work crazy long hours to keep the cars in the road, often driving all over Tassie for repairs etc. The long hrs were really hard on the family.
It was not a financially viable business, imagine if you will, restoring a mini then having some moron drive it at redline, valve bouncing all over Tassie, or writing off a perfect car rolling it down a hill because they lost it doing 130 around a hairpin... The business could only get 3rd party for the cars, so if it was wrecked, all they got was the excess.
I could go on, but I'd better end rant here.

Nope. Same business, it was called 'Ryan's Mini Car Rentals' was owned by Fusion and run under the Ryan's Name. Fusion is based in Poatina, which is where the workshop was.

I remember there being an article in the mini experience I think it was about a mini hire place down there. I will have to have a look. I think it was one of the earlier editions.

The article was in issue 1 of TME, it was called RYANS minicar rentals. This is the one the was run by fusion. In fact the entire town was owned by fusion. At the time of the article they were looking for a new mechanic. Hire rates were from just $33 a day.

Yeah, I might have done that. I also left a pile of bark and firewood in the boot which also crushed open a bottle of motor oil that was kept in there. I might have been guilty of driving the road from Great Lakes to Bronte Park (After being told specifically not to go down that road) and also crawled from Strahan to Queenstown with no brakes from a failed master cylinder.... sorry about all that...
phew, I feel better after all these years :P
