Spent 3 hours at the weekend cleaning the rod shifter box and fitting a KAD shifter. Oh yeah baby... 
I've also come to the conclusion that, like all British vehicles, most of the grease and oil appears to be on the outside of items rather than sealed inside! 
The shifter box only has a metal to metal slider sealing the front and the steel plate in the base has an open drain hole.

out of interest, did you re bush it?. When i did mine i turned the rod around, so the warn end was at the front, and rebushed the housing. Made the whole arrangement feel infinitely tighter
