Hi,

i am removing the cylinder head from my engine tomorrow night and was wondering which part number or brand head gasket you guys might suggest for my application.

my engine is a morris mini 1100 engine bored to 1210 apparently. i will find out when i measure it exactly but i have come to the conclusion i need to fit 2 head gaskets to help rectify the high compression issue i have.

do i go for 2 copper gaskets?
or two standard gaskets?
what brand do you guys suggest?
do i need to have the head machined before fitting back on?

thanks, Jason 8)

Only smallbore gaskets that I would buy now are the ACL so-called `monotorque' ones.
2 should work OK in your case. Retorque them when hot.
2 of the brown coloured alternatives will result in tears, IMO.
But hey, it's YOUR money, and engine...

ps. the only real permanent cure for your high C/R is pull the head and carve the chambers out bigger. It's not rocket science, just follow the pics in Vizard's books. It'll breathe better then too.

A large number of Ausmini members had early failures when using copper head gaskets but good results with Payen or Monotorque gaskets.

Two Ausmini members seem to think that the copper gaskets are very good.

Borrowed a proper mini flywheel puller this afternoon from a guy i work with. Thanks peter.

removed the flywheel and clutch assy and dismantled the clutch housing and split the gearbox and engine apart.

finally had a good look inside, but the results are not what i expected.

i will post a few questions with pics on different subjects as i have plenty of questions, but the main one i would like to ask here is, does anyone recognise these pistons?

i dont think this is a 1210cc engine as the previous owner told me. do these look like normal pistons are are these something someone recognises?

i will take some measurements on the weekend but just at first glance what are your suggestions guys?

thanks 8)

Yep, they are Imp, 68.0mm. 1216cc (actually) when used with a 1098 crank.
They are too short to use with a 998 crank.
Good pistons, but very expensive now (the imported ones).

I ran them in my 1st Mini back in 1968, but I used a 12G940 head and a 1275 gasket on it. Copper... :P

yeh i confirmed this today also. they are hillman imp pistons. i have read they are not to bad.

so the previous owner was half right!

according to the vizard book these require some offset bore mod's or something from memory, maybe someone has spent some real effort and money on this engine at some stage.

it only has a standard 12G202 unmodd'ed head though. what do you think of that combo guys, 1216 with stock 12G202?

the more i pull this down the more i am comming to the decision i will end up rebuilding this engine, unsure yet, but i think if this head is modded right, with the right chamber volumes etc it should go ok?

It won't breathe with a stock 202 head.
I would definitely either go find a 12G295, or modify your 202 close to the same, both in the ports and chambers. The stock 202's chambers are about 4 or 5cc too small for those 68mm flat top pistons, which is why your C/R is way too high.

2 gaskets will work but it's a poor solution.

i agree, the double head gasket is a poor solution, that was origonally an option i was assesing to keep costs down and just to keep the thing running until i could save and build another engine.

but as this is progressing it looks as though i will have to sort it now, and do it properly.

Ok, so i have confirmed the engine is 1215 with the imp 68mm std pistons. I have bought a 12G295 head in brand new standard form.

what are your suggestions for head gasket choice?

i was leaning towards the CAEA-647 composite gasket. I want a good quality gasket that will be happy with the bore size i have.

are there any particular brands i should be looking for?

thanks 8)
