Hi guys & gals,

I am about to replace all 4 suspension knuckles (I've got a mouse in the N/S rear trailing arm) and I am also going to replace all of the rubber boots on the bags as they are cracked.

Is there anything else you guys can think of replacing that is usually worn out? I was thinking about getting some new (i.e. good 2nd hand) helper springs as when the car's on jack stands, one rear wheel hangs ALOT (probably 3") lower than the other.

Cheers, Nick

One simple job can turn into a total resto if you're not careful.

I'd have a look at your rear trailing arm pins while you're at it,

With you're rear end is one of the helper sping bolts catching on the subframe?
I haven't played with a hydro rear end for a long time but what can happen with dry frames is the shocker bolt gets stuck on the subframe flange

It's worth pulling them out first and have a look at the knuckles. If the ball ends are OK you can just change the nylon cup and the boot.

Also, if any of the balls have worn through the cup you will need to look at the arm as it may have worn into the metal of the arm.

Thanks moemoke. I will definitely check that out while I am under there. Is it as simple as trying to move the wheel back and forth (kind of like feeling for worn ball joints?) I think the rear arms should be ok because they have been regularly greased (usually about every 1,500 miles).

The helper spring bolts don't rub on the sub frame (car has never been in a bingle). There is free movement. I can push down on the wheel and it will go further down before the spring pulls it back up when I release pressure. Good thinking though.

Cheers Pete. I will have a look but the knuckles on the front have had split boots on there for quite a while so I'm assuming the rears are the same and assuming the worst. If I can get away with just replacing the cup & boot it'll be smiles all round :)

may as well replace the subframe mounting bushes while you are down there. they are bound to be a bit sad after 40 years. Dead easy to do as well, the replacement parts are cheap. Even if you thiknk they look alright, there is no point replacing all those other bits and then leaving them IMO.

cheers
michael
