Post subject: | Breathing? |
Hello ladies! ![]() I've just got my mini back on the road (it's a '78 for those who don't know or can't remember...) and I'm absolutely loving it. However, I'm not sure it's liking the early morning drive to the station. Maybe it's trying to tell me I shouldn't be leaving it at the station all day... I'm getting mayo under my filler cap, but I'm not losing any water. It has previously been suggested to me that this could be a breathing issue. What do I need to do to set it up properly? Also when I changed the oil the other day it didn't look like there was any water in it. I had the rocker cover off the other day to do the rocker clearances, and under the filler cap was the only place where I had mayo. I cleaned it out this morning, and went for a bit of a drive (probably about 70-80 kms), and it's back, but just a little. |

Could just be condensation from the cold mornings. How far are you driving from home to the station? |

Give it a good long run, should cure the condensation problem, its just telling you it wants exersise |

expand you chest as far as you can and open your mouth making sure your nostrils are clear as well. this motion should cause air to enter into your lungs until pressure equalizes. then slowly relax your chest and stomach to push air back out through the mouth and nose. |

998cc (but it's bored out 20 thou) i don't have any breathers on it. I'm supposed to have the anti-pollution gear, so there's nothing going from the crank case breather or the rocker vent, they're supposed to go to the charcoal canister, right? can i just stick a couple of those breather things on here? it's a new head so i know it's fine, and I've just put a fresh head gasket on (monotorque) and the top of the block was nice and clean and flat. I'm driving about 25kms to the station. But yeah i reckon it needs a good long run. Who wants to come form a cruise? one weekend when the weather is nice... |

I would take the rocker cover off and clean under it, give it an oil change and take it on a run. Have you got any water marks/rust on the upper part of the dip stick? |

Same thing happens to me. Summer time no mayo. Now that its cold mayo is back. Its only in the oil filler cap so I just wipe it out every now and then. I think its from cold air hitting the rocker cover making moisture in crankcase vapours condensing in oil cap. I only have one breather hose running from rocker cover to carby. I have thought about running another hose where oil dipstick is to make a flow through ventilation as mine has no other provision for another breather. As long as it isn't using coolent i would not be to bothered. |

None of the motors I've built with a PCV system ever got mayo in there. Even on my 10 min run to work in winter. It is primarily a symptom of poor or no ventilation. |

'A' series donks can be heavy breathers ![]() If you are running a small bore and you need another breather an easy one to add is a sidecover with a breather on it, there are three types (AFAIK), one that was a U shaped open pipe (very early, pipe supposed to go to carb), a middle-aged one that was a pipe with a flattened/crimped type end (just vents to atmosphere) and a late one with an oil separator (outlet to carb/canister/whatever). cheers Jacob edit: ahh ok u are running small-bore, sidecover or rocker cover are the easiest to add. |

doc said engines with PCV systems, which actively suck the vapors out of the engine - which does get the water out. do you get a lot of water sitting in the bottom of your catch tank? I fitted a catch tank last year, without the PCV, and in the first month I had about 1" of water in it, just through breathing vapour. Recently I refitted the PCV, and the water is gone. I have the same two breathers as you |
