The Metros had a Hydrogas System. The 'springing' was actually done by a gas (dry nitrogen?) in the 'displacer' and they used hydro fluid to adjust the height. The two fronts were completely independant and the two rears connected together. Conventional shocks were fitted to the fronts however there were none on the rears.

The 1100 and 1500 displacers are very similar, the ends of the hoses are different.
The 1800 uses much larger bags on the front and the same size as the 1100 on the rear.

Other vehicles with hydro (hydrolastic or hydragas) are the Austin 3 litre, the Austin Maxi, the Austin Allegro, the Metro, the Austin Princess/ Ambassador, the MGF and maybe some others that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Going slightly off-track.. but didn't the 1800 have the displacers mounted horizontally?

Would 1800 rear units be good donors to replace sagged/flogged 1100 front ones? (/looks over shoulder for 1800-lovers lynch-mob)
