Post subject:  Will this dizzy fit my car?
As per some of my other threads, I'm looking at fixing up my ignition system.

My current dizzy is OK, but is getting old and slightly worn. It also keeps burning points. I've decided to replace it with either of these. What does everybody think.

The engine is a 1330cc (from a 1275LS), it has a 266 cam and very mild head work.

Post subject:  Burning Points
Burning of points prematurely is normally caused by either the wrong coil being used ie. a resister type coil or too low resistance in the coil primary winding. Changing distributors will not solve that type of problem. Condenser also plays a part in points burning but you usually find that a crook condenser makes the engine run bad. Make sure you are NOT using a GT40R coil which is wrong for a 12 volt ignition system without a Resistor. You need to use a GT40 or similar. Might be a good idea to get someone who knows what to test for to do a few tests before changing things and adding more complications to the problem. Like I always say Guessing gets you no where and can cost you money for nothing. Good luck.

ryan let me know what you end up doing, im looking at getting electronic ignition for mine, i need something suitable for A+ and from my brief research there is not much locally and ill have to source from OS so possibly save a bit on postage if we both get something from OS

I bought the electronic ignition conversion kit from this supplier, and it works perfectly.

I'm guessing that a 45D dizzy with a conversion kit is much the same as one of these (the hall effect sensor has probably just been integrated better), just make sure you have the right coil.

I'm only using a 998, so I'm not sure how well it goes in a performance engine, but there was a noticeable difference. Idles much nicer.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I have checked the coil and the resistance is fine.

The only reason it keeps burning points is because they keep closing up.

There is no guess work.

I want to move away from points and I want to replace the dizzy as it is getting worn.

So which kit does everyone think is better?

I bought a D170600 Pertronix distributor with Ignitor II and a 45KV Flamethrower 45001 coil, from http://www.vintageperformance.com/retro ... eries1.htm
It worked fine, but the advance curve didn't suit my particular needs, so I sold it to an ausmini member.

Ryan I bought a simonBBC 45D dizzy for my 1275LS. Its a standard 1275 as far as I know and works fine. There is a thread here by me with photos of how it came from the box. The curve isn't programmable so if you have plans for a new cam or something it may not suit.

For a standard set up it probably will. Hope this helps.

I have Electronic Ignition Kits for all Lucas distributors. $100 a Kit plus post. All I will need to know is what distributor you have. I even have kits for 29D and for the 59D on A+ engines.
