Have been trying to remove the detent springs (rear bottom left hand side of gearbox). The top one (I think 1st and 3rd gear) came out fine. The bottom one is a bitch. The welsh plug or whatever that covers it just wouldnt undo. I've tried sockets, spanners, wrenches, shifters - its just stripping more and more. Whats the best way to remove it?

Where do I get a replacement plug?

I did it up with a standard 3/8" drive socket. Should come undone OK.
A 1/2" drive socket has too much chamfer in the end- won't fit it properly.

Bring it back here and I'll do it- can fit another plug if you want.

Yea a good 1/2 inch set is all I thought I need. Cheers, Kev - gotta put it down on the "take to Kev on the weekend" fridge list.

If you have a grinder you can grab the socket (9/16"?) and grind the end flat so the chamfer is gone..

Jim it's called a detent plug, holds the springs that push the plungers that hold it in each gear.

No they are at the back, behind the drain plug. On all, except rod change boxes.

Well I think by now we're way past that - that plug is a fair bit smaller that 9/16 now :)
