Post subject: | Light weight road car idea |
Just wondering what you can legally do to a mini to make it as light as possible? My idea is; Gut the doors, Replace all glass except the front windscreen with race grade perspex, cut out the rear seat and side bins, Fiberglass bonnet and boot, Rear beam axle, light sway arms and coil overs, Minimal dash and steering coloum furniture. Stuff like that. For safety and rigidity it would probably need a roll cage. Any other ideas or do you know what is legal after engineering? |

Back seat is lighter than roll cage so leave it in. Carbon fibre bonnet, boot and doors. ![]() |

Alloy Head Titanium Rods Ally Radiator Remove Heater Unit and replace with electric heater blower Magnesium or Carbon Fibre rims no spare 1/2 tank of fuel where ever you go. Straight through system with no muffler no sound proofing. no bumpers Tin pulley on crank and not a dampener Plastic fan light weight Alternator light weight Starter motor lightened Crank Lightened Flywheel single carb No sunvisors Alloy engine stays.... Lots of other things you could do but it would only be measured in grams and not kilos.. ![]() |

cut off all the bolts that stick out past the nuts and throw em into a tin and see how much you take off. Drill holes, lots of them. Holes weigh very little. Cut the front inner guards out. Cut the boot floor out and replace with aluminum or carbon.... something like this maybe? ![]() |

Do a mini sprint conversion. Bout 7 - 8 years ago i got to drive Jaan Fox's Sprint replica. This car is awsome, it had no speedo so i don't know how fast i went but i know i got 7500rpm in 4th ![]() ![]() It had: Less metal in the body No trim No boot floor A small fuel cell A small battery in the middle of the car Fibreglass flip front All perspex windows except the front Gutted doors 1 seat No speedo Holes throughout both subframes, starter, dizzy, alt, clutch cover and flywheel housing 1 alloy tube gear selector rod Alloy pedals also with holes 1 awesome engine ![]() I cant remember what else but there was probably more. |

start from an empty shell, only put the most necessary items in, replace doors, boot floor, flip front, boot lid, beaver panel with carbon fibre.... alloy hinges, drill holes in places, magnesium wheels, alloy rear quarter panels, no spare tyre, fuel cell, jump start it everywhere, single carbon seat, lightweight steering wheel, no dash & make sure it's a round nose to improve aerodynamics....& then there's the engine |

![]() and leave the stereo and dynamat out of it . Some good ideas coming up from people , don't automatically think that fiberglass is lighter than steel though and make sure the roll cage you put in to improve body strength isn't heavier than the steel you removed that reduced body strength . |
