 Post subject: Stuck brake drums

I tried to move my Clubman GT project on the weekend. It hasn't been moved for 10 years. Brake drums are stuck solid. I tried attacking them with a brass hammer and they seem to move a tiny bit but wont turn even with a pretty big bar on them.

Does anyone have any tricks for getting them off?

Was the car stored with the hand brake on?

If yeas then its most likly that the handbrake cable pivots are seized and you with have to free them to release the handbrake.

You can also back off the brake adjuster to free the brake linings off the drums and if you still can not get the drum off you can belt the 4 wheel studs in with a copper hammer. This will usually allways free the drums up enough to remove them.

Its never a good idea to store a mini with its handbrake on, the brakes will allways be a pain later on. And I would'nt be heating up anything unless you plan to replace the drums, linings, wheelcylinders & maybe even wheelbearings etc afterwoods.

Hopefully not asking the bleeding obvious, but have you released the brake adjusters fully?

so you put a bar across the studs (with nuts on them of course) and tried to turn the drums?

just tappty tappity tappity around the drum with a hammer, try to turn it, tappity tappity tappity, turn, tappity etc.

with a nut on them, you can tap the ends of the studs to shock the drum off, I usually need to do that to get my drums off cos I do the screws up very tight

Not sure if it was stored with the handbrake on.

Have tried plenty of tappity tappity tappity, tried turning them with nuts done up tight and a big bar.

Haven't tried backing off the adusters or looked at the handbrake swivels.

I drenched it all in penetrating oil yesterday.

Just need some dry weather so I can get at it again.

From here you will need to step up to a wappitty wappitty wappitty approach, and then perhaps clong clong clong..

I hope you can get it off without splitting the drum however.

Give the handbrake arm on that pokes through the backplate a tap in the off direction.

Try rolling the car or turning the drum both backwards and forwards. Once the shoe grabs the drum they grab harder as it turns so you need to go the other way to get it to release.

See if the adjusters will back off but if it has been sitting a while they could be stuck as well.

When Josh got Spiro the Moke home from Kingaroy years ago, we had this same problem. Everything was frozen solid from 10 years of sitting still.
Splitting the old drums with Mr Anglegrinder was quick, easy and painless (the drums were knackered anyway).

Another possibility if someone has put their foot on the brake pedal is a blocked hose. Pressure may go into it and lock the wheel, but not return fully. Leaving the brakes stuck on. Releasing fluid from the bleeder fixes that to get it turning.
