I took the 1360 out today, when I undid the Hardy Spicer U/Js, oil dripped out from inside the flanges.
The 2x S rubber `seals' that they put in the gearbox gasket kits now are junk, just natural rubber, it's allergic to oil and rots... Were new 11,000 miles ago.

I'm going to turn up some lurethane ones before the 1412 stroker goes in.

I'm sure the BMC originals were neoprene or nitrile rubber, when genuine parts could be got.

BTW The 2 rubbers that go in the top of the rocker cover have the same problem... :!:

I've picked up that some mechanics use the old ones and fortify (if thats a valid description of the term) them up with silicone when they put them back in.

I chucked new ones in my gearbox, I hope they keep up. Mine's got about 6k on it now.

I'd be careful what grade silicone, the usual builders stuff gets dissolved by oil and petrol, I found out the hard way (boat fuel tank) years ago. Engine gasket silicone should be OK.

I have to say that many of the rubber seals (ha!) that are made (or at least available) for Minis these days are not too good at all. The shaft type seals still seem OK, but the rubber stuff is quite poor. Disappointing situation.

Well, all Minis have that same clip setup inside the CV too, it's common for the shafts to pull out of them. Yeah I've seen that happen often.

Yes, I have seen the shaft fall out of the outer CV a few times.
I fit new clips to them and keep the old clips in the toolbox!

The shafts can come out of the CVs but it's not possible for the in-board CV to come completely out of the gearbox, the engaugement is too long.

On the other hand if the bolt on your hardie flanges come out, the flange can come out of the gearbox. I have seen that happen.

Should have put an R clip in it to hold the bolt from coming undone

got that covered as I purchased a new pair on Friday from Kc's. Piece of mind but @ $10.40 its something you have to pay

I have seen gasket sealant (comes in a small gray tube) used under the washer and around the bolt to seal these up or they leak.

I use `3 bond' silicone sealer there on 850/Mini Deluxe/Mini K flanges, it seems to work OK.
But I think the Hardy Spicers really need a rubber in there to sit against the 2 split collets.

I'll machine some lurethane seals from a spare set of engine steady or tiebar poly rubbers. I knew they'd eventually be useful for something...

Nolathane tie bar rubbers are the same diameter as these `seals', I just have to slice some bits off em in the lathe, parallel and approx the same thickness (a little less for lurethane). Can get 2 out of each rubber. 8)
I'll put a smear of 3 bond sealant on em when fitting.
