Hi everyone.

am going to try and heat the clutch housing in the oven tonight to help remove the idler gear bearing that is difficult to remove.

can anyone tell me what temp to use. who has done this before?

i am thinking heat the oven to 150 degrees C, drop it in there for 5 mins or so, pull it out with gloves and tap it on the concrete?

does this sound like about the right plan?

page 6 of my thread in the members gallery has a pic of the bearing shell.

http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... c&start=75

assistance greatly appreciated. i will be giving this a try in a few hours.

cheers in advance. Jason 8)

If you don't have the extractor tool, you can carefully grind two slots across it with a dremal (if you have one). Will just fall out, no heat, no burnies.

problem is, i spent 2 hours with my el-cheapo dremel and it crapped itself

so the dremel option is out.

i am going to heat it tonight, just wanted feedback on temp and time in the oven etc.

I MIG tack weld a 3/8" x 4"? bolt in there, with the head inside the bearing.
Then I put an 850 diff drive flange over it, with a thick flat washer and nut, and wind the sucker out.
The heat of the welding warms the alloy a bit, they come out easy.

Being a skinflint I then grind the bearing's remains off the bolt, ready for next time.

Beware with a dremel... don't gouge the housing bore!!!

Don't tap it on concrete!!! Use at least a piece of wood!!

I removed the pilot bearing's outer race with that method, but not the idler bearing. I heated the housing up with a blowtorch (from both side), cooled the race down with some water (&a brush) and it fell right out after a few taps on a piece of wood. :)
