Post subject:  Fitting Bullet mirrors
JUst received 2 Bullet mirrors from the mother land today to put on my Rover mini, took off the inside door cards and there is no way of getting your hand in behind the inside panel to fit the bolts to the mirror, any ideas other than drilling 2 bloody big holes on the inside of the door panel to poke the bolts through to the bottom of the mirror, or is there an easier way,,, :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

No, seriously.....

I have mine with only one bolt in them. :oops: They still seem to stay where I want them ok though.

Another tip is to tie a string around the spanner you use. After you try and fish it out of the bottom of the door for the 2nd time you will know what I mean. :wink:

EDIT: Late model doors might have more steel, so probably disregard anything I've said. :roll:

Gotta reach up through the big square holes and use a spanner.
That's how i did mine, find someone with long slender fingers and hands :D

I watched someone try to fetch a spanner out of a customers door for a good 20minutes with a magnet.

Turned up about 4 nuts, no spanners though.

No not really you see the base of the mirror is the female so I would have to twist the mirror onto the thread and that would not work. :roll: :roll:

I think I will have to drill through the inner door panel so I can get the bolt and socket through to screw into the base of the mirror... :wink: :wink:

I had the same problem a couple of years ago and did end up drilling holes from the inside and putting grommets on them afterwards. Hardly the best result, is it? Anyway, can you get a ratcheting ring spanner onto the bolt? Once you get the bolt started, it should work.

Or sell the mirrors and buy Tex ones. The plinth mounts a lot easier. The bullet mirrors I put on rusted in three months just sitting in the driveway as they were real cheap chinese ones.

I binned the cheapo chromed bullet mirror (rust on it in 6 weeks) and fitted a Tex SS `Rover shaped' mirror instead.

Beware the plastic so-called plastic `plinth' that comes in the Tex box. On a hot day in Oz, the crappy plastic wedgie bit inside it shrinks and the mirror can then fall off, true story.
I fixed the problem by buying a proper chromed Tex plinth, p/no CZH3521 from Mini Spares.

and put nuts on them?

Mg Rocket, that is exactly what I am doing at the moment, cut off the thread, run a die over it, and then drilled 2 new holes and pushed the new thread through......drilled 1/2 inch holes on the inner panel and will then be able to poke a socket and the nut through, tighten it up and hopefully that should solve the problem.....Seeing as the car never gets wet, or at least never intentionally, rust should not be a problem, they are quite heavy and I think that are all stainless steel :wink: :wink:

Post subject:  Bullet Mirrors.
On my Hairy lime Clubby I used to have another sort of Mirror which screws on from the outside. When I decided to fit Bullet Mirrors I had to mount it on the same spot to use at least of the old holes and cover the other under the base of the new mirror. As the old mirror was mounted way forward on the door and on the flat bit, it was a hell of a job fitting it there. I found that the only way of doing it was to use a hole saw and cut two holes under the Door trim area as close as possible to line up with the outside holes to feed a 1/4 inch socket and universal through. Because of the work involved and it is not very "Sausage fingers" friendly I still have not fitted the passenger's side one. One day !

i did mine wasnt to hard had a felx head spanner got 2 fingers on it and done it up had a few cuts on my hand from raming it in the door

What I have decided to do is the following. 8) 8)

Get a 1/4 inch bolt about 3 inches long, cut the head off and run a die over the full length, fit one end into the thread in the base of the mirror and have the threaded bolt sticking out from the bottom.

I will then mark and drill 1 hole, ( I will use one of the holes that are already there) and drill both holes through the door panel from the outside as deep as the drill will go, so when I poke the mirror and thread through, it should be easier to feel and find from the inside, hopefully put the nut in the end and tighten it up, with a 1/4 deep headed socket. Have to check the finished depth before I commence to tighten to make sure it will tighten to a sufficient depth. This will help to prevent the numerous rude words and the need to donate 15 layers of human skin to the inside of the door...

Hope this works, but sounds like a plan to me... :wink: :wink: :wink:
Will report back and tell if it worked OK.
