Some of the hairy underlay stuff under my rubber floor mats is rotten.

(Actually doesn't look so bad in that piccy)
What is the proper name for this stuff?
Could they thought of a better way to trap moisture and promote rust in the floor?
Is this stuff still available?

Cheers

It's Hessian

They used hessian underlay under almost all carpets then.

There is a foam alternative that most people use now, it still holds a bit of water doesn't rot.

cheers

you could try bellybutton lint as an alternative

I run my carpets without underlay, I can't hear road noise with the Dellorto carb anyway.

Cheers. Might try nothing (or belly button lint) for a while and then see if I can clean up the enough of the original to get by - some of it is fairly yukko though.

I leave mine out too and when I do a resto I am going to set the carpets up so they can be easily taken out to inspect underneath. Maybe with velcro. I will fix up all the leaks too to stop any rust coming back I hope!

I double up on the carpet. I fit an old carpet on the bottom furry side down and then fit the other carpet the right way up. I also trim the bottom one a bit around all the edges to fit better.

You can also use the more modern stuff that can be purchased through Knox Carpets or Tru-fit.

If you use nothing you will find overtime that you can see the floor pressing shape through the carpet.

rubber matting from clark rubber. works really well. you can get stuff with a grip pattern on both sides. insulating, sound deadening and water proof.
