There were actually some very late Cooper S's released from the factory with clubby tailights & GT style gauges.

Didn't the late ones also have lift-up door handles?

That colour is Hairy Lime, a factory Leyland colour.

I personally think this is rubbish.

As the collector of Mini K data, particularly the last of them with lift up door handles I feel I have a bit of evidence to back this up.

The Mk2 Cooper S and Mini K were very much the same car with obvious changes/additions so for the sake of deciding if a Cooper S had these tail lights fitted I think we can look at the Mini K.

From the details collected so far there has only been 1 Mini K claimed to have clubby tail lights as standard and this car is far from the end of production. If it had them why not all the cars after that time?

I reckon it is all a claim from owners to try and justify the changes that have been made to a car. Show me the evidence

As for the car pictured above, the owner acknoledges that the tail lights have been changed, but he likes it like that :D

I'd second that Steve. Having owned an entirely untouched 71k in camino gold that was reportedly one of the last made having been an april car it definitely had roundy tail lights and S style binnacle. Co-incidently it was made in the same month and colour as an S originally restored by Greg Scott-Young that did its rounds in magazines some years ago. I believe it was in Fast 4's along with his Aqua GT. I knew Greg well when we both had the cars at the same time. His car also had the usual S tail-lights and binnacle.

the other problem with the clubby tail lights is the door handles on that car ;)

I've seen a few roundies that had clubby lights installed in the 70's

Theres a member of the NSW mini club who bought a cooper s brand new in 1971, has clubbie doors, tail lights & GT gauges & clubman top & bottom dash pads, all factory fitted, he still has the car to this day.

Hi Doogie

I'd be real interested to find out where in the timeline this car fits in.

Can you get any details of it for me :?: Car/body number, month.

If you can could you PM it to me.

Cheers

Ok I also know the owner (he lives 10 minutes away from me) As far as I know it is British Racing Green as we all know BRG is never the same as the car beside it  .
The rear lights were changed decades ago for better visibility/safety.

I have heard this rumour about factory-fitted Clubman (or UK Mk2) style taillights on the last Cooper S many times - but I have not found any evidence to support it.

Of the 113 1971 Cooper S made I have personally only seen about a dozen, and none of those have Clubman-style taillights.

Again, without any hard evidence, I believe this is yet another urban myth.

The same goes for the Clubman GT instruments.

The doors are a different matter, as all Minis from 1 January 1971 had to have burst-proof door locks and low-protrusion door handles (for pedestrian safety) to meet ADRs.

Issue 23 of TME takes a detailed look at the 1971 Cooper S.

Cheers,
Watto.

Watto.

My records support this totally as the earliest (so far) burstproof door fitted Mini K is 12/70, obviously in preparation for the 1/1/71 date.
