Post subject:  Aussie Austin Cooper S?? on Trademe

Hi guys,
I know someone interested in this car but I have some concerns. We would be grateful of your learned opinions.

Watto, do you remember this car on the 50th in Takaka? It was parked on the side of the road with a For Sale sign on it.

Regards
Al

ha!! no way that's original!

the number stamped on the firewall should be about 500 different to the number on the plate, and it's more like 3500 different, and the radiator shroud is missing so there goes the other identifier...

and then there are the rest of the things wrong

Thanks Simon, I had a few similar thoughts and thus the post. Are the regulator and servo/booster positions wrong too? They would be on an English car. I can see around a dozen things wrong, none of them a problem by themselves but, together, a picture emerges.

The number on the firewall should be the same as the number on the plate.
The number on the missing radiator shroud is the one that should be aprox 500 different.

The last Mk1 was car 5486 and that one is 7376 so I have a feeling that it could really be a 65 Deluxe!

Who'd pay $20k for it anyway? Even in Kiwi $$ :D (Just kidding - no offence to our cousins across the drink there)

Even if the numbers matched, the condition is hardly there for $20k..

Hi Al.

Yes, I recall the car from that lovely sunny day - oh, no, hang on, it was a lousy day

Shame we didn't see under the bonnet then.

I concur that the numbers certainly don't match.

A couple of Aussies have asked me about the Austin badges on the car - and yes that is correct for Australian-built Cooper S exported to NZ - badged as Austin and YCG2S2 on the ID plate.

However, the numbers on the ID plate are nothing like those on the car, so it is quite clearly not what it is pretending to be. Interesting, though that the owner has shown all these numbers - perhaps thinking that they in fact prove the car is genuine, when they actually prove the opposite.

Cheers,
Watto.

Thanks for the help guys, you've prevented a prospective buyer from being duped by a fake.

I also agree that, even if it was genuine, NZ$20K is too much for this car.

Kindest regards
Al
