stick a 1098 crank / pistons in it
I'd do the same with my 998, but since we had our baby (4 months old now) I don't think the missus would like me spending the money!
I'll probably just be getting a stage one kit for mine and call it a day

Hi guys (& girls), Just about to start my motor rebuild and i am fishing for some ideas. I have a 998 with a 12g202 head, all stock. I want to keep the original engine and box as they are all matching numbers. I was thinking of 40tho over size but need some ideas on what to do to the head, cam etc, etc. Any and all ideas will be taken on board and costed up. (New baby in house so funds are a little stretched) Again, thanks in advance Al.... |

Alby, How long is a piece of string??? Not very far when there's a new baby to be considered along with rebuilding your engine. It's impossible to say what's needed without stripping down your engine and check measuring everything. Has the engine already been rebuilt and has it already been bored out??? If you get it bored out, then you will have to get new pistons and rings. What condition is the crank in....will that need a re-grind?? And the cam......assuming it's stock will it too need re-profiling?? When you put in a new or re-profiled cam, you must also put in new valve lifters. While the engine is apart, you should always replace the oil pump. Hows the timing chain??? When you replace it, use a duplex one. How's the bearings (crank, big ends, cam) It all adds up mate but it may also be false economy to get hold of another motor that you can just transplant into your pride and joy. Sorry to sound like doom and gloom, but it really is quite a big expense. However, what you could do is to pull the engine, clean it all up then start to buy the stuff that you know you'll need in bits and pieces, like the oil pump and gaskets for starters Talk to a few machining places and get quotes. See what other people here have to say. |

The most effective ways to get power from an A series would probably be... The cylinder head The camshaft The capacity As said... easy way to more HP and torque with a 998 for the road is to fit a 1098 crank and pistons. 1098 crank (coupled with a fresh bore to your next size), a free flowing exhaust and a well sorted induction and ignition system would make a substantial improvement on a standard 998. For this... If you could source all the parts in new/good condition at a good price and you were doing all the work yourself (probably out-sourcing machining work) I think this would be achievable for as little as $1000 but more than likely (worst case) around $2000. If you stay with the 998 crank then for more power you just need to go through the engine and 'improve' and 'optimise' things... The more power you want, the more $$$ you'll have to come up with (unfortunately  )

Hi rodney, engine is straight out of the car that has been sitting for about 15 years, not to sure if it was running when parked. it looks pretty oily. I will pull it down and check everything. Hi Mad Mini, i'm located in melbourne and if it costs between 1-3k thats ok, it might just take a little time. I have a good mechanic that has been doing my cars for about 10 years and he looks after me and lets me use the work shop when i need to. I save a lot on labour as he just tells me what to do and i do it. He also has some good machine shops he uses and only charges me what they charge him. At this stage i'm really just after some ideas. Thanks |

Hi Al this is what I did I had a 998, 3 sync box from Mini Mad ^ Moke. First off I was just going to put it into the Van but I could not help myself first off I was just going to do the Head then I decided to do a Cam Also. 
I sat back. You have to build the foundation First. Dr Mini helped me here. We looked at my collection and chose a 4 Sync Box and he replaced what needed to be change and put it together for me as I have no idea. Do your Diff & gears first This motor was a +20 998 Block & Crank but I had a 1098 Crank handy so that was cleaned up & balanced, then with the flywheel and then with the backing plate & clutch. Block bored out next size up +40 and pistons & rings purchased & also came bearing replaced I chatted with Gr on Cams and chose his RE83 and I got him to clean up and a 202 head and set up valve faces for which I purchased. I also replaced the Oil & Water pumps, Timming chain, Inlet Manifold & full gasket sets. Yep I was going to just put the engine in after a Clean up 
Work from the diff up. Talk to people of what you want from your engine and expect it to take at least three time as long as you want it to. Any work you can do yourself will reduce the cost but in other areas it will just save you some time |
