Post subject:  998 engine not firing... help please

Having trouble starting our 998 engine.
Have replaced spark plugs and leads, bought new starter solonoid, new dizzy and new battery.
Engine has spark when cranking, engine is turning but not kicking over.
I have checked firing order and set the leads correctly.
Does occasionally let off a bang out of the exhaust.
Need help kicking over the last part of the engine... any ideas?

Maybe dizzy 180 deg out if firing into the exhaust.

Carb getting fuel ok? A tiny bit (like half a cap-full) poured into the carb should let you know (if it tries to run, then a fuelling problem).

cheers

Sounds like the firing order is 90 degrees-ish retarded.

ie firing order is 1 - 3 - 4 - 2

Try putting 3 on to 1, 4 on to 3, 2 on to 4 and 1 on to 2.

i agree with GT mowog,

Sounds like shes 90 degrees out. If it was 180deg out the backfire out the exhaust would happen more often.

Also just to help the situation, advance your dissy a little, (this helps it get started, specially if it hasn't been started for a while) and if you have some start your bastard put this down the throat of the carby.

Try that and see how you go.

My bet is on the dissy leads being 90 out.

Sounds like what I went through trying to start my car after a couple of weeks - just needed the battery fully charged, fresh fuel, and plugs cleaned and quite a few tries........

Runs sweet now........

I agree with the Dizzy being out. Do some research on setting the timing, find a brick wall and bash your head against it until it resembles some form of sense and go from there. :)
