Post subject:  1962 Morris 850 find
Don't often contribute to discussions but read contributions constantly. My neighbor has found what purports to be a 65000 genuine mileage 1962 850. The car certainly looks pretty good and apart from an average respray looks very original. All seats and the mats look to be in virtually perfect condition.

What I would like to know is the correctness or otherwise of the engine and body numbers.

As I say, the car is a 62 Morris 850 the engine number is 8AMUH318270 and the chassis number is 11089912754. Do these numbers match with the year and does the engine number sound right for the chassis number?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

What would determine if the engine is correct for the car/chassis number would be that number being stamped into the car ID plate, wouldn't it :?:

The body number you have provided looks wrong to me!

Check what is on the plate on the firewall. On a 62, this will be on the right hand side of the firewall when you look in the engine bay. There should also be a number stamped into the firewall itself just above the plate - this number should match the last few (five or so) numbers on the plate.
On a 62, the plate normally has something like YMA2S1 19382 / 32456, the 32456 number is the body number and should match the number stamped into the firewall above the plate.

With the numbers you have given 11089912754, I am guessing there is a / missing and the actual body number is 12754, with the earlier numbers making up the factory tracking number. For the age of the car, the date on the wiper motor gives a rough guide as to manufacture (on an original untouched car).

Based on the body number being 12754, the engine number you have quoted appears to be correct. That being, is numbered about right for the original engine that the car left the factory with. I can also tell you that this car is a 62 (probably about March production - or before June anyway, at a guess!). What is the colour, as they can help date it as well!

Check the engine block for a number stamped on it and see if it matches the eng.No. stamped on the ID plate.
The other numbers you quoted are
110899 is the UK CKD number and the 12754 is the Aust chassis No.
Check on the firewall either side of the speedo hole and both of the numbers should be stamped there

Off subject a little, at what point did the id plate change from one side to the other. i have seen a few photos of cars with them on the wiper motor
side?

I think it was in 63/64 that the plate moved to the other side. I know that most Cooper's had them on the left when you look into the engine bay.
