Post subject:  New brake pads are rough: should I smooth them off?

Got some new brake pads today and they have a very course finish on them I'd be a little weary about putting onto new slotted rotors. If they were non-slotted rotors I'd just throw them on and not think about it. Would I find any benefit to sand the surfaces just a bit to take the high spots off before installation?

Thanks.

When I fitted EBC green stuff pads to my car, they were deliberately made with a rough surface, (a bit like painted over sand on the contact surface), from the factory, so as to help 'bed in' the pads to the disc's. So if yours are like this maybe it's the same?

They should be fine as they are. I always rough new disk pads on my concrete driveway to make then a bit rough as they will bed in better and no glaze the new discs.

my guess is they are like that so that they bed in easier i fitted bendix pads to my berlina wich had a titanium stripe for bedding in looked a bit like the side af a dimond blade so i think you should put them in drive around for a day or 2 then pull them out and see how they look if your worried

they don't sell them for minis, but one fo the big brake pad manufacturers have a product line of pads with a very coarse ridge of hard gravelly material across the pad. The intentention is to grind the rotor when the pads are fitted - horrible looking things
