Post subject:  Crunchy Diff Replacement

So many of you know i blew the diff in the outback, and i drove 100 kms with a smashed spider gear.

Given that i have OBVIOUSLY pushed alot of small metal bits through my oil galleries and throughout the block.

I am planning on taking the motor out this weekend and start pulling off the gearbox and diff. I will be rebuilding the diff completely, and i will be rebuilding most of the gearbox, so the bottom end will get flushed of its crap.

Is it worth cracking the crank, and cleaning out the galleries that run through the block and caps. What else should i look at.

Its not worth cracking the crank. Itd weaken it and youd have to get another one.
But its a must to remove the crank and replace the bearings. If you dont youll be replacing everything again when those bearings disintegrate.
Just assume that everything that touches oil needs to be looked at/replaced.
So check the bores and pistons for any gouges.

make sure you pull the oil pump apart and check it. you will probably have to replace it due to all the deep scoring and pitting making it stick during movement.

To be really sure that you have got it all, make sure you drill out the brass plugs in the oil galleries and lean them out as well. Replacement plugs are easy to get or make and very cheap.

IF the crank oil galleries are full of swarf the crank would need a regrind.

I would not trust blowing a gearbox rebuild on a motor that is more than likely knackered.

Save some grief and do the whole thing up

Don't do it half way.

Strip EVERYTHING, clean, check and replace what you wallet will allow.

It will be cheaper this way.

If your oil pressure is still good then the bearings should be OK. The oil filter will stop the swarf getting to the bearings for a certain amount of time. Your oil pump will probably be scored as that is in the line before the filter.

Mind you, if you are going to pull the engine down then it isn't that hard to replace the bearings if just for your peace of mind.

Especially considering how far from home you are the distances you are still to do . No point doing a half job now to only have to pull it down in a few months time when you have low oil pressure or another failure .
