Post subject:  Oil Cooler pipe size?

Can someone confirm the thread size of cooper s oil cooler lines?

Is it 3/4" 14TPI NPT or BSPP?

What is the thread size where it enters the block. I come up with 9/16" 18TPI UNF?

And the thread size where it enters a spin on oil filter. It seems to be 1/2" 18TPI and tapered, but I don't think its a BSPT?

I'm looking at replacing my old braded pipes that I had made at Enzed years ago with some from Earls, so I'm just trying to work out what adapters I need

1/2" BSP (parallel) is the thread on the hose ends.
Block thread is 5/8-18 UNF.
Filter thread (originals, not the new repro ones) is 1/4 BSP. (O/D is .515", so yeah it measures about 1/2")

I use Pirtek's 1/2" return line hoses (more flexible than metal braided/crimped ones) , fittings are push-on barb and the hose is rated 500psi.

[edit] Karcraft stocks the block connection fitting you are after.
But I make them from a 1/2x 3/8 BSP brass nipple- I machine the 3/8 BSP end down to 5/8-18 UNF.

Thanks Doc that was quick.

I understand the block thread. Must have been my beautiful plastic verniers that I was using.

Still having trouble understanding the hose end sizes. I measure 1/2" ID and 3/4" OD. Are pipe threads measured differently?

All pipe thread sizes (both BSP & NPT) are sized by the ID of pipe, not the OD like a bolt etc..
eg. as I said, a 1/4 BSP thread measures .515" OD.
BSP is also the Metric standard pipe thread.
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_st ... ipe_thread

The hose ends are 1/2" BSP.

Hi Rookie,

McCullochs Hydraulics here in Bendigo can help you out with all you need with good quality hoses and fittings. They even have a mobile service.
Cheers, Greg
