They really need to be a matched pair with float bowls on the outside and linkages together in the middle, like this (thanks for the eBayer who posted this pic). I'm sure I've seen unmatched twin carby setups but the linkages were a nightmare.

i have a single 1.5" SU and was wondering if i found another SU just like it can you use them as a pair and build twin SU's, or can you only use a matched set. i noticed most twin SU's have the floats on opporsite sides to each other. is this correct? just tossing some options around. Jason |

cool, thats exactly what i wanted to know. i suspected that was the case as i thought the linkages should only work if the floats are on opporsite sides. thanks for that jason |

Just to confuse things, BMC did sell hot-up kits with a manifold and another carby so that you could just fit your existing carby to the new manifold (with a new needle) This two identical carbies with the float bowls pointing the same way. It is not that hard in reality. Some other companies offered the same type of kit. This photo is from the 1966 Mini Deluxe accessories catalogue. 
Oh, lots of other cars with multiple carbies had identical carbies in all locations instead of mirror image carbies. A Jaguar with three carbies has three the same. |

The Sports 850 had same side bowel carbies - but they weren't supplied by BMC but by Peter Manton Motors and someone else that I sure someone else will know. These were built with BMC approval but were a private mod |

It was the same kit as the BMC one. It just had a different name on the manifold. |

This is my carby It is apparently the same as a sports 850 set up.
