Hey Guys Were I to strip why body myself then have it blasted and a few bits of rust fixed, what is a ballpark figure for a full body respray? I know there are millions of factors to include but just want a general idea to work towards. Thanks |

Give me more details and I can ask a friend who owns a panel shop. Are you going to do all the straightening of the body and deliver it in primer ready for top coat? Are you going to hand them the body to get straight first and then paint. Do you want it painted outside only or inside, engine bay, boot, and underneath?? Then paint type matters as well. Do you want solid, metallic, or candy paint. Is it 2 tone or one colour all over. Time is money. Generally hand over a reasonable shell that needs minor fettling to get straight for an inside, outside, underneath and Jonny D up here will sting you about 9k. He has a good reputation for quality work but is not over the top expensive. He does plenty of minis and lotus cortinas for mates and they all seem to come in at around those dollars. Probably somewhere in the $4000 to $10000 range which is still a bit broard but it depends on what preparation needs to be done and the type of paint and finish you are looking for as well as price variances from different paint shops. It would also be easy to spend way more than the upper figure I quoted here too, the figures I gave here are for mid range. If your going to the trouble of a full body strip out and bare metal respray, don't waste good money on a cheap job. Any body / rust repairs would be on top of that. |

I think Hanra was about right with his estimate given the level of info supplied. Take a look at this link and the build pages by Morphias. He spent $25 on panel and paint and still had to pick the shop up for a ding in the beaver panel. http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=49979 On the flip side a mate of mine did all the rust repair and prep himself and took his Alfa to a panel shop where the owner lets the workers do private jobs on the weekends. It had to be in after 3 on a Friday and out before 7 on the Monday but a 2 tone, 2 pac with one colour metallic cost about $2k and is flawless. So Hanra just about had the range covered. It is the hardest part of any restoration because you risk so much at the hands of someone else and if it isn't right it'll cost a lot in teh future or piss you off for years. Even Mick's amazing resto (search) has heaps of info on the mechanicals but virtually ignores the body work and paint. Also see Archangel's problems with completing his project. I gave my car to a guy with $2500 and asked him to blast it and start the repairs. Total estimate to be ready to paint was $4500. Trouble is that was 3.5 years ago and I haven't seen the car or money since! If I win the $40 million tonight I'm setting up a mini paint shop. Jobs done at cost! |

You're in sydney yeah? First hump to get over is finding some one INTERESTED in doing it.... Then, if they are interested you could be waiting a while. Prices? Well like everyone else has said.... you get what you pay for. If you require NO panel work and all it needs is paint..... around $4-5k for an "Average" paint job. If the car requires panel work and paint, and you were going for show quality finish... $20-30K isn't out of the question. A lot of shops (at least in sydney) tend to treat these cars like a joke. They show little interest in doing the job and will keep putting it off and pushing it back. A lot of them have "Rust-o-phobia" and can't be stuffed with them... EVEN IF YOU TELL THEM THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BRING IT TO THEM BARE SO THAT THERE ARE NO SUPPRISES. I would really really insist that you shop around, not just for price, but for a shop that is going to take it seriously. Don't take me the wrong way, there are people out there that will do the job for you... but just be patient, or you could be up for a whole lot of frustration and missed deadlines. |

Actually.... I'd give Ivan a call at Castle Hill. He runs a mini specialist shop. He does do body (and paint) work. I can't vounche for his work personally, and he does have to take care of other repairs (mechanical) so I don't know what his turn around times are like... but at least he is a mini fan... so he'll take it seriously. <edit> Found his details Unit 44, 2 Hoyle Avenue, Castle Hill, Tel: (02) 9659 3314 |

if your not desperate to have the car completed in a hurry and dont want to spend alot of cash or somtime just a case of beer go and contact your local tafe that has a panel beating and spray shop. EG:Mt druitt it might not be a show quality but they do a good/excellent job 
Ive got 2-3 cars painted for only the price of the paint!! cheers, jordy. |

He will do the welding and body work though. His prices are reasonable for the amount of effort he puts in, he simply cant let a car out if its not done properly to his standards. This means it take longer, etc. He also wont give you a fixed price, its too hard on him and too hard on you really. Great bloke, loves to help... Pete PS: If you mention 2k (2-pak) on your mini to him, expect a wrench or spanner thrown at you. He hates it on mini's with a passion. |

Then, if they are interested you could be waiting a while. A big +1 on the above!!!!! My car sat in two different panel beaters for just over 2 years! One shop charged $4000 in 1999, then the next one charged me $7800 in 2001..... DO YOUR HOMEWORK. |

Ivan is a bit of a traditionalist.. He still drives around in his original spec austin 850 with the original acrylic. I don't think i've seen him drive a single car with any real mods, or new paint. But, he does do a fan-f%&king-tastic job, i've spent thousands at his shop and I've yet to be disappointed. Not to mention all the work he's done for free. Friend for life if you as me. |

He can give you a list longer than your arm of cars in 2K which have bubbled, cracked, peeled, etc etc all before they even hit the road. To be honest, if I ever have mine re-sprayed, I wont go 2K - mine is one of the cars in the above list (bubbles, etc) Having said that, ive seen heaps of mini's in 2K that are fine... all in the prep I guess. Mine was prepped by yours truly and I did a fantastic job for an IT guy... very very poor job as a panel/paint guy lol Pete |
