Hi all,
Today I bought two fire extinguishers from Auto one for $40 (great deal I thought). They both have good metal mounting brackets and are CAMS approved if that means anything.

Now I'm trying to work out where to mount it.

My options are:
- in front of the seat across the center member.
- passenger side wheel arch.
- along the center tunnel/exhaust tunnel.

Who has pictures of where theirs is mounted?

Cheers,
Ryan

Don't mount it in front of your seat. You may accidentally kick the catch and let it loose on the floor where it may roll under the brake pedal. (I have seen this happen on the track in Supersprints so many times)

I honestly prefer mounting them in the boot in a road car. It can't hurt you in a crash when it is in the boot. If the car is on fire you are going to get out anyway! (when the motor catches fire most people get out and then get back into the burning car to get the extinguisher)
But you can hang it under the dash depending on the model.
The wheel arch is bad as the screws are exposed to water spray from the front wheels which will get in the car and start rust. (just look at my Cooper S, it was perfectly fine till it had a fire extinguisher fitted in 1968 8) 8) )

I like to mount them under the front of the passenger seat. I am working on the basis of being jammed in the car and a fire starting! I atleast want to have something I can reach from the drivers seat. The NSW Police mounted them on the passenger side wheel well.
Morris has raised good points, not a good idea having it roll under the pedals or activating it!

I have one mounted on the cross member under the passenger seat. I've never had it come loose on me and it's easily accessible.

I've got one mounted on the left hand wheel arch, in 11 yrs its never been kicked or dislodged by the passenger, but when i fitted it i thought it would be an accessible place if needed. I did have an experience about 30 yrs ago in my MK1, where i T-Boned an EH panelvan
at an intersection in Liverpool and the hit was pretty hard, the mate that was with me was knocked out and i was sitting in the driver's seat, no windscreen in the car and flames from the broken carbies, spilt fuel coming through the front at both of us, let me tell you i thought we were in big sh!t right about then, when a council street sweeper that had been washing gutters out late at night drove up to the front of the car and drowned it with water . I should say that i was able to get myself and the mate out of the car before the truck put the fire out with the water! Faily scary moment for a couple of young fellas on their first trip to Sydney.
I will check for any signs of rust where it is mounted now that you have mentioned it Morris 1100.

I didn't want to drill any holes so I made a bracket (the shiny bit) that uses the two screws that secure the passenger door check strap.

I think I used scrap stainless or aluminium. Not too thick or the original screws won't have enough thread to grab.

The other spot I was considering was along the floor in front of the passenger seat (crossways) somehow using the seat fixing bolts.

I fitted it the same in my 1275LS. However, I would not recommend using a bracket with the plastic retainer clip - CAMS would not approve it and they could result in the extinguisher dislodging.

That's where I put mine. $40 for two is cheap! I just paid $35 for one (metal mount with two straps).

Always check the manufacturing date and buy the newest one they have.

Dont declare that you havve a fire extinguisher on your insurance policies. If you do and then have a car fire the insurance companies then want to know why you didn't put the fire out - either totally, or before the extent of the damage occured.

Just be careful around that one.

Yeah, I think a lot are getting plastic brackets/straps now, that was a "Quell" brand one too, not some no-name brand. It is pretty solid but steel would be better.

The quell one designated for cars also has the cams requirements logo on it. This if the metal twin strap doovi.

And another thing... Dry Chem extinguishers are almost useless.
They are good when new and they are good when hung on the wall in the garage or house but when mounted in a car the powder will settle from the vibrations and can go hard in the bottle. You need to remove the extinguisher and give it a good shaking every few months to keep it working. Otherwise when you do use the extinguisher all you get is a tiny puff of powder and a big puff of air and you are left with a bottle full of powder.

When you go to use it remember to shake before use.

Do not trust a plastic mount. You need a proper metal mount.
