Post subject:  Dash Kits

has anybody made up their own dash kit, im thinking of getting some nice wood and making up my own dash. Are there any templates, or anybody done this before with some tips on what to and what not to do.

I made one for my deluxe many years ago, I based it on the rokee style 3 piece dash that is very similar to what was available in Australia back in the day. I used some old carboard to make templates and shaped the dash in masonite and pine, then veneered it with iron on blackwood veneer. It looked pretty good.

there are loads of posts about making your own dashes, and posts about people telling people where the posts are about making your own dashes.

I believe there was one recently in mini chat with lots of useful links.

Search around see what you can find, ill see if i can post some links for you

Well, here's mine:

Excuse the lack of carpet and general messyness there - I was doing a number of things at once.

I actually measured it all up and cut it out myself, and then found this on the net: instuctions and plans for the exact same thing I just did. There should be a link from this page to the plans:

Another interesting topic: The Mini Dashboard Directory

There are some pretty amazing dashboards on here!

As for tips:
I laminated the wood to a thin piece of plywood to stop it from warping. Which was a bit silly, because that means that the blackwood shrank and the plywood stayed the same, so the dash actually curves both horizontally and vertically. It's a pain to mount flat speakers and a glove box onto a curved surface.

I used exterior varnish to finish it (because they have UV absorbers). It actually came up pretty well, and a lot cheaper than spraying it.

Hope it goes well.

I've got several plans. PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.

Just get them printed at 1:1 at a Production Print place and stick it on as a template. When I had mine printed they even mirrored it so I could stick it to the back.

They even have cut outs for Twin and Triple Clubman style Gauges and Centre style.
