Ok it started two month or so ago when a mate purchased a little red deluxe, the body is in great shape with next to no rust but the paint in not very good and done in acrylic.
its got S brakes, 1275 ls motor and rod box, twin 1 1/4's, new interior with retrimmed seats, carpets, door trims etc

good little buy at the price he got it for.

so its unreg and he asked if we can take it straight to mine, i say ok drop it over and i will have a look over it for you.
brakes dont work, it does not start, so i got a bit of work to do yeah.......

well after I find around 1/2 kilo of dirt in the float bowls and float seats not shutting off i got it running ok, for now anyway.
but after 5 mins of running it cuts out and there is a bit of smoke from under the engine, smells like electrical smoke................

Bloody fool of a previous owner has run the battery cable over the top of the exhaust pipe which has melted through the plastic of the cable......... DAM FOOL

fix that with a new cable.

So this week I decided to look at the massive amount of camber on the drivers side front wheel and the brakes.
well to my surprise there is only one bush on the caster arm....
fit new bushes, found some play in the ball joints so I thought I would remove the hubs and re-shim them on the bench.
cant undo the ball joints...... eventually get them off and have now fitted 4 new ball joints.

and now for the brakes......
ok small mistake sure anyone could fit the calipers on the wrong side to have the bleed nipple at the bottom of the caliper and not allow the air to bleed out.
swap em over fit new flex lines as they were craking and go to look to bleed the fluid through, wow that fluid looks funny........ the reservoir is all stained RED and ther fluid is so thick.......
the bloody fool has been trying to bleed the brakes with transmission fluid.................

OMG what else am i going to find on this car.

seems like its going to be a long build.

I wonder what other surprises i am going to find.

It reminds me of that show that used to be on TV called "Bush Mechanics". I would check the tyres as they are probably stuffed full of grass and actually have no air in them!

g-Rant

I feel your pain. Most second hand cars are just someone else's problems.

But, I find that the dumbheads who do the dumb crap as you have mentioned are usually to stupid to be "really" dodgy to the point of being sly and deceptive.

You will probably find more goofy type stuff but the mayor stuff should be "fingers crossed" pretty legit..

If the brake system has been filled with auto oil you will need to change all the rubbers in the master cylinder and wheel cylinders.

ATF ain't oilz, it is actually glycol based. It's closer to brake fluid than motor oil...

It can still stuff the seals in brake systems.

Very true. Change the lot and flush the system.

With rebuilding Hetty I found paper stuffed into places with bog smeared over the top. I think that's the worst thing I've found so far, no wait there was the Woodstock and Cola can pop rivetted to the rear beaver panel to fix a rust hole (actually I thought that was pretty clever). Worst bodge job I've done on her was to fix the sill panels, battery box and boot floor with steel sheets cut from washing machines. :)
