Post subject:  checking steering rack out of car

Hey all,

Up to the part where I need to refit the front subframe to my clubby van rebuild project.

Before I put the frame in, I want to get the rack in place to make my life easier.

Are there any useful checks I can do on the rack out of the car without fully dissembling it? I know the basic checks like looking for play in the rack bushes, checking the tie rod ends, but are there other specific items I can check to see what condition it is in?

I have a few of them, one is rattly on the passenger side rack bush, the other was in my car that was running up until a few years ago (& was still pretty good) and one came in the van, it feels really good, but unsure....

If it really needs disassembly to check that is ok, the boots on what I think is the best one are looking so-so anyway.

cheers

Jacob

All the ones I do up I bin the following as a matter of course, regardless.
boots
2 belleville (conical) rack preload washers
rack bush

If it's out of the car I'd do it up first, you are only looking at around $50 worth of bits (+ bearings if they've corroded).
