It is common in old motors, I think it's the result of oil left in too long. Sludge is not a good lubricant and then steel picks up on steel.
Straight cut drop gears cut out the side thrust, if ya can stand all the noise in a daily. I can't.

I was under the impression that there was a needle roller modification for this. I read it somewhere a long time ago. I think it was in Avon Bar Racing Catalogue years ago.

No sludge in this engine, Oil and filter changed every 3000km

The big queston are they serviceable, one of the thrusts is shot for sure

I have gone thru my boxes ans no idler gears to be found

From the pics it appears quite OK to me, however put up some pics of the gearbox case and the transfer housing - these bugger up well before the gear and thrusts do.

And before final assembly of the gearbox to block, fit the gear, gasket and transfer housing and check the running clearance on all sides and you may need to change thrusts to end up with a running clearance of between 0.003 - 0.006". Best go for more rather than less clearance.

Good subject  while we are on it, just test fitted my idler with the housing fitted up and it is so tight you can barely move it.

my idler thrust washers are quite pitted so will definatley replace both of them, but wanted to measure it all first before i order which ever sizes.

my question is, has anyone ever had this problem? is it a common issue? having it bind up. what are the sizes for these ? standard etc or just the thickness size?

Jason

Common issue? - Well you do need to check every one, every time before final assembly and adjust as required.

Thrust Washers are available in;-

0.121 - 0.123"
0.124 - 0.126"
0.127 - 0.129"
0.132 - 0.133"
0.134 - 0.135"
0.136 - 0.137"
0.138 - 0.139"

Use a thicker gasket Jason

Yes! And it was a pain to find why my clutch was not working properly. :?

I found out that the grey primary cover gaskets are not the correct thickness and I would advise you to get hold of the orange gaskets which are the correct thickness.

Ar, there is the original 'standard' Red Gasket, some after market ones in grey material and one mini supplier has had some thinner ones made so as to avid the need to go to thinner thrusts.

I'll measure a standard one later (unless someone else has one to hand)

oh,,, i have piles of all different thicknesses from 60thou down to 20tho,,, gasket makers just make gaskets & rarely are they told how thick they`re meant to be for this particular application

but it`s not such a bad thing,,, if you have piles of different thickness thrusts & gaskets on had to sort what`ever problems you find :-)

std issue red-ish (orange) ones are 35-ish from memory

Ok I have been trying to figure out whats going on.

I think i have solved it I used early washers with no oil holes !@#$, quite obvious once you line them all up together

Quite interesting is that the A+ factory ones they made the oil hole way bigger and the oil track bigger as well.

So I am going to modify the holes in mine and put a very very fine champer on the edges of the washer to allow oil to get in. I have started on a donor washer from the first time the ider bearing seized

Now to have a ring a around and find some good washers and a gear thats better than mine. i am being fussy because of the previous idler issues

GT: the cases are spotless, i am concerned that the hardening has broken through, just mind you. I am not taking this engine a part

A picture paints a thousand words

thanks matt, yeh i had the grey bovic brand gasket. took it to mini automotive today and ken fixed it all up for me. that gasker was very thin and ken mentioned it is possible it may have been machined at some stage also.

sorted through many different sizes and used a combination of a machined thrust washer and one second hand one of the right size to give the right end float.

GT mowog my question was, is the tightness issue common, and the question has been answered by esplaining the gasket thickness differences.

thanks guys.

It is only as common as those who don't check on assembly.

And they do get a thou or more tighter when they warm up, as Anton (GT) found out once.
