Post subject:  Torque settings

My haynes manual states 60ft/lb for main bearing cap tension and 46 ft/lb for conrod bearing tension.

can anyone confirm if this is corrrect for a 1098? the haynes manual lists these settings listed above for a 998cc, is it the same for a 1098?

also with the cylinder head tension, should i use the settings specified by the haynes manual or the settings from the gasket maker? (ACL)

thanks guys

Main Bearings are 60 ft/lb (tick) but the Big Ends are only 35 ft/lb

Cylinder Head - what studs are you using? are they new and what nuts?

yeh i bought a new set of competition studs and nuts.

so should i re-tension the conrod bolts to 35 ft/lb? is 46 to much?

head gasket is ACL monotorque.

Big Ends - yes, 46 ft/lb is over the top (for standard bolts). 35 ft/lb is the corect factory torque, however if you are using Unbrako Cap Haeds you can go to 42 ft/lbs.

Competition Head Studs and Nuts - what brand? Did they come with any recommendations?

Factory Studs, depending on specifically what they are, vary in torque settings from 40 to 50 ft/lb. The required torque is not dependant on the gasket, the the 'stretch' of the stud.

998 & 1098 are same torque settings.
But if you have done the factory 1098 rod bolts up to 46, I would bin them- they are now overstressed.

I would not trust them now. bolts are cheap, blowups are not.

If as the Doc says, you've torqued them to 46 ft/lb then YES (I'm surprised they didn't break).

42 ft/lb for that stud kit.
