Post subject: | rust in roof gutters |
Hi All, I've used a nylon/plastic wheel thing and stripped all the paint out of the roof gutters and found that once i've done that there's a fair bit of surface rust in them... nothing deep... its just there.... also they are fairly rough inside (normal i guess form the welding in the factory) whats the best way to fix that rust before I prime, is a good soaking in Phosphoric Acid up to the job? Also, after I sort out the rust should i put and bog or anything in there (using a glove and my finger or something?) to smooth out the gutters? or do you just leave them how they are? Thanks |

Dont paint them with a brush, I would pour the paint in, nice and smooth and nice and thick, when its time to remove again, it should peel off in one big piece, anyway my 2 cents worth. |

are you going to be painting the mini soon? primer holds in moisture so remember you will be doing this all over again if you dont seal it with a colour.. use a wire wheel to get into the gutters and remove the rust, then use a rust inhibiter, prime and paint |

When I have done the gutters in the past I found it impossible to use a wire wheel to get right in to where the roof panel meets the gutter. I fabricated a bent screwdriver with a chisel end to pry out all of the old seam sealer to reveal any rust. Once fully removed I then rust treated thoroughly using POR15 Metal Ready, cleaned again, re seam sealed the join (little finger is good for this), then primed and painted. Believe me there is always some rust developing under the original seam sealer so its worth the effort to dig it all out. |
