Post subject:  Chrome Plating - worth it?
I'm looking at buying a 'Copy Chrome' plating kit to redo the MK1 grill. Blurb says it's looks as good as chrome and wears just as well on decorative surfaces without the hassles of real chrome plating. Cost is $550 for the kit that will plate about 64 sq ft of material so I'll have a heap left over. Works out at about $8.60 a sq ft or roughly $52 to plate the grill ( plus time and power and frustration factor :roll: ). What would it cost to have it done commercially? or to buy a new grill?

Would there be a market to set up a sideline plating small items for Minis?

No - I use Jane Kits for zinc plating and it works OK but they don't have a chome kit . This mob do http://www.caswellplating.com.au/

Cost to have chroming done depends on how much time they spend on preparation. Chroming on it's own is fairly cheap.

Maybe talk with John at Mini King. I think he was involved in chroming at some stage - seem to remember a forum discussion some time ago.

I've been down this path. Although i never tried chrome, I did many bits in nickle plate and eventually the plating peeled off or items went rusty. Bit of a WOFTAM.

Preparation is vital, obviously something I did not pay enough attention too. Unless you are going to make a hobby of it, and prepared to spend ALOT of time on it, my advice would be to get your bits done professionally, and avoid disappointment.
