can anyone tell me the exact location and mounting of the earth strap under the drivers side engine mount?

i think it bolts on top of the mount and under the mount is that right?

NO.
One end goes onto the clutch cover bolt below the starter shroud, the other to a hole in the RH inner guard.

I don't see why that wouldn't work. All you need to do is bridge the rubber mounts. The electrons just need to flow from the engine to the body (or is the other way round?? :). So as long as the earth lead allows this it doesn't really matter where its attached.

Yeah problem is you're just bridging the engine mount to the subframe, and there's no guarantee that the subframe is 100% earthed/grounded. Just as easy to put it to the inner guard which is guaranteed to be ground, as the battery earth strap in the boot is also connected to the body.

It certainly could do the job well, if the contact points on the subframe are kept clean and paint free (It passes close to 100 amperes at full load), and at least you wouldn't ever forget to take it off.

The normal connection point has a captive nut welded onto the chassis which nearly always guarantees a solid connection.
