I just found the car on trademe and I think that although the ID plate is genuine the pop rivets may not be the right ones.

Thanks, I always thought that the stamping was all rasied.

I might go and have a closer look at the car..

The car is missing a few correct features like bumpers and trim but the rest of it looks ok.

The Aussie Cooper S has an imported motor so the engine numbers were not matched to the car till it was built. The ID plate was made and attached to the car before the engine number was stamped. They also had to remove the British tag on the block that the number was stamped onto and stamp it directly to the block.
I wonder if they did the engine block and the ID plate at the same time? :?

Looks original to me, very hard to reproduce that type of number font unless you have had the stamps made.

As M1100 said, it looks like it has had a mk2/mini K dash at some point (the hole between the body numbers is the tell)

The engine number is heavily struck compared to some, but it is correct.

I've printed your pic and compared it very closely to those on my cars, agree with the others, looks the goods to me!

Agree thought that the rivets look too 'aluminium' so probably been off the car at some stage. The paint behind tends to suggest this too.

So the plate looks legit, but the car it's currently attached too?

Who knows? :?

Well, given that the body number stamped into the firewall matches the plate, I'd say the chances are good the car is legit too...
