My fav thing is painting.....but my second fav thing is sandblasting.....

I had a little time to do this today.......what a difference!!

Not bad for a small compressor. I actually think the small compressor is better, because it's not as harsh on the metal.

I have 2 new chrome dashpots, so the current ones haven't been blasted.

ooohh so nice im goin to get a sandblasting gun for sure looks like fun

Crikey Anton.. looks like a new one....... tell me what does that do to the surface, does it make it slightly pitted or does it have a smooth finish?

It does pit the surface very slightly.....but with a small compressor it is minimal. A big ass compressor would be harsher.

How clean is it! It even made the linkages, springs and bolt heads look new!

I won't get to do the rest till next weekend.....

That's a huge difference

excellent anton, i tried to polish/clean my carby up a few weeks ago
gave up after i did the bell section
coz thats all i had the motivation for (and all you can see)

does sand get lodged anywhere in there?

ive heard you can also use polymer beads
soft and not as harsh as sand.

but yeh Anton uses normal sand
in a kids sand play bucket.

i used dried, washed sand...bagged from Bunnings - $5 a bag

I blast my stuff in my son's plastic pool. when i finish I empty the used sand back into the bucket. I little bit goes out of the pool.

Not the most professional set up.....but who cares what you do at home

How do the dash pots come off? Do I undo the screws around the base? I have seen dash pots what are just cylindrical, with no screw holes in the base....

Hmmm... must drag out the sandblast gun I bought 5 years ago and never used..

You unscrew the black plastic damper thingy at the top of the dash pot

yea tried that Chongers.....are they hard to budge? I just couldn't get mine off......

Anton, SU's usually have screws holding the dash pot down at the base.
just rememebr to fit it in carefully without scratching the needle
and the spring too
and a bit of oil too
not too thick

The dashpots are held on with three screws. Keeo the dashpot and piston in matched pairs as they come off the carbies. Not to be alarmist but protective breathing gear needs to be worn by anyone doing sand blasting as silicosis of the lungs is a real danger.
