I was just sent this;-

"The NSW RTA is proposing changes to the current registration system for modified vehicles. These changes will mean that the majority of modified vehicles will be classified as individually constructed and will have to comply with the ADR's current on the day that it goes for registration."

Has anyone else heard of this? Is there any truth behind it?

Do you have any other info on this? I have not heard anything coming down the line about it but that doesn't mean it's not happening. If you can give me some more info I may be able to do some digging.

would not surprise me at all if this is implemented in all states of australia, as unfortunately a lot of modified cars shouldnt be on our roads due to dodgy registrations.
the imported car issues have probably caused this clamp down due to those in power of issuing the hot rod registrations letting cars through that should never pass, ive heard in vic it was simply how much $$$$ you paid as to whether the car would pass or not.
in term of the govt cracking down on a new import (talking about pre 88 cars) i dont think it is as bad as some people make out,as ive just been through the process with a 57 pillarles belair, and 64 ss impala, from the US, both had aftermarket mags which werent the original factory sizes, and had a fair bit of bling under the bonnett,.I will admit i was worried when all the regulations came out (especially seeing as id bought these cars 6 months ago and just hadnt got round to shipping them) as everybody was pretty much telling me that they wouldnt get through, dotars were sent pictures of the cars ,and thankfully we got the import approvals for both 1st time. I think you will find the cars that are getting knocked back are those which have blowers out the front,hydraulics,22 inch mags, convertables made from sedans, kit cars built on passenger vehicle chassis, etc etc generally those cars which which shouldnt be on the road.
cheers

GT,

It is indeed true. However there are many parts of the current modification rules that will not be changing. Also the way engineers are certified by the RTA is changing.

On the good side, RTA is consulting with knowledgable people. They may not pay any attention to a bunch of ratbags on a Mini forum, but there are ways and means

I was notified through Engineers Australia about meetings to discuss. I posted a notice here.

And just to remind you in this thread,

I received this email today. If you are friends with a member of Engineers Australia, get talking to them to ensure that the interests of Mini modifiers are catered for. Unfortunatley I will not be able to attend because I am in the Netherlands until the end of this year.

Alternatively try to correspond directly with this Jill Gallagher character from the RTA.

RTA Consultation Session with Engineers Australia

VEHICLE SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE CERTIFICATION SCHEME (VSCCS)

THE SCHEME TO REPLACE THE ENGINEERING CERTIFICATION SCHEME (ECS)

In 2010 the RTA proposes to implement the Vehicle Safety and Compliance Certification Scheme (VSCCS). This new scheme will replace the Engineering Certification Scheme and applies new scheme entry and administrative requirements.

The RTA will be undertaking public consultation on the scheme, including the changes that will be needed to the Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2007. Prior to that occurring, we are consulting with key stakeholders to ensure that they are briefed about the proposed regulatory framework, and specifically about the proposed criteria for assessing the competency of scheme applicants. (The scheme will operate as a licence issued to competent persons.)

Members of Engineers Australia, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers are invited to participate in this consultation with the RTA at an evening meeting as follows:

Date: 30 June 2010 (Wednesday)

Time: 6 pm light refreshments for a 6.30 pm start

Venue: Engineers Australia Harricks Auditorium,

Ground floor, 8 Thomas Street, Chatswood.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide members with an overview briefing of the VSCCS and seek feedback, as well as consult on the detailed competency criteria proposed in order to be licensed. The meeting will not have time to cover the various vehicle standards that apply (and that are not changing as a result of the VSCCS), or deal with operational issues relating to either the Engineering Certification Scheme or the future VSCCS.

The RTA values the efforts made by members of Engineers Australia over the years to support the ECS, as well as the development of the VSCCS. We look forward to receiving your thoughts.

Unfortunately as I am still in Netherlands, I was not able to attend.

cheers

Thanks for reminding me of that, the grey matter is not what it once was  but, yes, I do recall reading your earlier thread now.

I don't think it to be the end of the world, not at all. Just some more hoops to jump through, however overall I find this all a bit 'over ther top' considering that these cars are very much in the minority, although I am welcomed to be corrected on that.

Cheers
