Hi,
ive got a 'unknown' muffler and im very happy with it and the noise it makes (and the neighbours it annoys )

But this arov i took it off the car and noticed that there is a large dent on the muffler casing it-self, around 1/2'' deep and 2 inches round!

Would this be effecting the preformance output (not that it matters that much!) or is this a hazard?
and would it be ok to get rego'd considering its on the bottom side in clear line of view??

cheers jordy....

So long as it is not cracked/leaking it should be fine for rego. It wont affect performance as the casing on the outside does not interfere with the pipe through the inside, so the flow would not be altered.

I've dented a few, no biggy.

Cheers,

Dented Muffler I would not worry at all unless as said above its got a crack in it but thats unlikely. Most of the time their is a join just before the muffler and you maybe able to spin the muffler around unless its a side exit. A dented muffler for rego..I would not worry..you would have more dents in the floor than the muffler that would need more closer inspection

I used to do key-bangers in my 1980 Holden Rodeo diesel. You turn the ignition off and turn it back on after a while. The exhaust goes BANG!
In the case of the diesel it would puff a large white cloud of half vaporised diesel out of the exhaust and into the tail sitter's air conditioning. In the case of my mate's Dad's Kingswood it would split the exhaust system open like a banana peel. I am pretty sure it didn't do the Rodeo any good either..

A certain un-named forum member had to return a rented Toyota Coaster bus with a destroyed muffler and managed to be on a plane before the rental company found it.

I used to blow up Holden mufflers for fun when I was younger. :D

It works by the fuel getting pumped through the motor into the muffler where it ignites once you turn the key back on.
So find a long downhill stretch (the main street of Cowra is a good example) and just turn the key off and let the motor keep spinning in gear. Give the accelerator a few extra kicks if the carby has accelerator pumps to throw some extra fuel into the motor and then when you get to the bottom of the hill turn the key on and order a new muffler.

It will not work with injection and does not work very well at all with SUs but an old Holden it works well!

If you just turn the key off for about five seconds and pump the accelerator you might get a good POP. But if you coast for a mile or so it might blow the exhaust.

I was once going down the Highway and flicked the key off and gave a couple of pumps. Just before I was about to turn it on I saw a little old lady on the footpath so I knew I couldn't do it (weak *unt ) So I ended up coasting along for about another kilometer before I turned the key back on...

Funny how the back seat always looked crooked after that!

I use to do it also in the RX4 but it was even easier. Rev it up to 11,000 and just leave it in gear and let the revs die. I spat three mufflers off and my favorite placed to do it was rite out the front of Westfields Parramatta. I made the mistake once and a cop car was two cars behind me. I guess I expected the canary. Thursday night was the best because you saw the flash also from the exhaust

Bloody rotaries! I once did a 24 hour endurance race and when I went to bed after doing a long night time driving stint I could still hear the rotaries in my sleep. Not only that I could still see the flames out the exhaust in my sleep!
