Hi, I'm looking to get some steel to practise my welding and eventually to put in some small patches in the floor. What thickness should I be looking for? Where can I buy small amounts of steel sheet in Sydney? Somewhere around Ryde or Silverwater would be perfect. |

I usually buy mine from Edcon at Brookvale but there are a few suppliers around Suppliers around Sydney. Just Google "Sheet steel suppliers sydney" I think it is about .8 or .9 mm, but I usually take a small piece from the area I am repairing and get them to match it. Also most suppliers have an off cuts bin you can get some small pieces from which usually works out cheap. |

Find a road side collection of stuff people are throwing out and get a couple of washing machines. Then cut the panels off with a grinder, so then you can practice your grinding AND welding. ![]() |

michaelb wrote: I usually buy mine from Edcon at Brookvale Thanks heaps. I might head over there some time, Brookvale is'nt too bad from work. I can't find much else online. In the Yellow pages I found Southern Steel and Mascot Steel but they are also a bit far. What about filing cabinets?? Would they be the right kind/thickness of steel? Probably pick some up on council clean up s as well - or if you want to buy some old ones, give Reverse Garbage at Marrickville a call, they usually have some for about $20-30 |

I measured the floor of my 1964 850 (with a micrometer) when I welded repair panels in. They were 1.6mm back then (before rust). I think later Oz floors are a bit thinner. UK floor repair panels are only 1.0mm thick, no wonder Minis rust out fast over there. ![]() I used 1.5mm zincseal sheet for floor patches, it welds OK and lasts longer than plain steel. |

if you want there is a washing machine of the side of the road at Charles st, carlingford, very close to the silverwater area you were looking for sheet stock. I saw it this evening. |
