You know that scene in Apocalypse Now where Martin Sheen says "I asked for a mission, and for my sins they gave me one"? I feel the same way about the Clubman Estate...

Anyway, the latest problem in getting the car back on the road is the brakes. There's too much travel at the pedal and I've been told I need a larger bore master cylinder. The brake guys (whose knowledge I trust) have said a 13/16" (20.6mm) would work but it needs to be a single line, not tandem cylinder.

The rear wheel cylinders are 1/2". The calipers are 4 pot metro units with vented disks.

They've suggested boring out a 3/4" cylinder, but at over NZ$400.

I find it hard to believe that this is the best way to go as plenty of people run metro disks on a mini, and I bet they don't make new master cylinders to do it.

So does anyone have a solution which is (significantly) less than NZ$400. The wife is going to freak if she ever finds out how much this is costing...

Sorry, forgot to mention that it's a single line circuit. I'd rather not change to dual circuit as this has already cost significantly more than getting a disk kit air freighted from the UK. So much for saving pennies...

Like most people, I just have a standard single line master cylinder on mine. I don't have too much pedal travel.

Are you sure its brake travel not air in the system

With 1/2 rear cylinders you should get a good pedal.

What master cylinder do you have in it and is it in good condtion

I have some where what master cylinder to use with what cylinders for metro four pots, I will try and find it. It was in a Miniworld mag some time ago

It's been in at ABC in MartinSquare and the guys there have a huge knowledge of brakes (as you'd expect), even picking that the booster is from a Hillman Hunter

I've tried looking for a suitable 13/16" master cylinder and you can Wilwood ones but they can only be used horizontally, not vertically. The 13/16" mini cylinders are for tandem circuit brakes, but I wonder if you can just blank off one of the outlets?

Yes. You'll need to put a bleed nipple in the top one and bleed it, run your brakes from the lower one.
