These days the exception tends to be the mini with matching engine numbers, most have had engine transplants or replacements, seeing as the youngest ones are getting on to 33 years old!

I assume what you mean by "wrong engine number" is that the engine number on the block doesn't match the one on a plate fixed to the car body in the engine bay, if not ignore my ramblings...

cheers

Jacob

You are supposed to go to a blue slip inspection station and get it inspected, and they will give you paperwork for the RTA to change the number on your rego papers. You need a receipt/bill of sale for the engine in the car, or a stat dec.

It used to be that the engine no was on the rego label, now it is not. At pink slip inspection now they tend to just check the date on your compliance plate (or the VIN plate on later cars) [edit] if you have one.
VIN seems to be the primary vehicle ID now, not engine number like it once was.
So some people don't bother about a different engine number any more.

If you do a vehicle check on the VicRoads website using the car registration number you get the body number/VIN, engine number, colour, year of manufacture, etc.

http://www.vehiclestatuscheck.vicroads.vic.gov.au/

If you don't want people to know these details it makes sense to blank out your car's registration plate in any photographs, otherwise this information will be provided to anyone who does a query.

yeah I know... but then we might as well keep them locked up in an underground container never to see the light of day again cos it's printed on the rego sticker anyway
