Post subject: | SU and angle of float bowl! |
so i took my twin 1/4 SU's to a carby place last week as well as supplying them with a complete overhaul kit. i get a call today saying that the jets that i supplied are wrong. The pipe going from the fuel bowl to the jet was too long apparently. I took one of the carbs home to have a look, and it seems that they have put the float bowl level with the body (the main part of the carb, not sure what its called). after fiddling with it a bit, and putting an old float bowl rubber in to put the float bowl at an angle, i get the jet to fit perfectly (from what i can see, they have put the left hand rubber in the right hand carby). just for some clarification so i dont look like an arse when i tell the carby place they are wrong, the fuel bowl IS supposed to be at an angle to the body of the carb yeh? thanks for your help! |

Yes, the float bowl must be vertical when in the car. The angle to the carby varies with manifold. eg twin carbys on a Mini (Cooper, etc) are mounted at 30°. [edit] I fitted an ex- M850 1-1/4" SU to my bro's Hillman Imp to replace the crappy Solex it had. It is mounted at 45° and runs fine. Float bowl is vertical, that is the secret. ![]() |

thanks for the timely reply drmini! I was sure this was the case, but the carby bloke was adamant that he was right... this will be the last time I take parts to a non mini mechanic! |

![]() To mount the float bowl at the required 30deg you need these rubber mountings For 30deg LH bowl - AUD2178 For 30deg RH bowl - AUD2179 If these are put on the wrong side carb the float bowl will be horizontal. The mounting rubbers give either 30deg or horizontal float bowls depending on which carb, LH or RH, they are fitted to. There are also 10deg/20deg mounting rubbers for LH or RH carb for use on, IIRC, Sprites and MG Midgets which have 20deg inlet manifold angles. Hope this helps RonR |
