Post subject:  tyre scrub, 6in rims and caster ***added pics

I have a set of widened cooper s rims, 10 x 6in with ET of 10mm. I assume the front has standard Cooper S track/offset.

OccasionallyI find that the outer edge of the tyre tends to rub the forward section of the front guard esp. if I am entering or leaving a driveway at an angle (eg entering a servo) and the wheels are at about half way to full lock.

I was having a closer look last night and noticed that clearance is less than a cm on the right side and almost touching on the left at the very front lower corner of the guard.

I'm concerned that when i buy new tyres the extra tread will cause it to rub even more.

Is it possible my caster is incorrect ie the wheels are too far forward?

Is this a common problem with 6in rims?

Can I adjust the standard tie rods or will I need adjustables?

Has the front apron panel ever been replaced in the cars life? With the grill out, looking at the car, is there a hole in the panel on the right hand side (passenger) which looks into the wheel arch?

I have the same issue on my Deluxe with 4 pot calipers and Mamba rims.
I am running 165's on 10 inch rims with a decent offset.

Tyre rubs on the drivers side and is very close on the passenger side under the same conditions as described above.

Not sure if apron has been replaced, certainly there is evidence of repair years back eg replaced guards judging by the spot welds I've been told.

Not sure what hole you mean in the front apron but I will take a look when I get home and take some pics if able.

Cheers

I have the same problem, r/h outer rubs on hard left hand lock, i am also running 6x10 Mambas, with Yoki A008 ,(which don't help ) and the front panel has been replaced by the previous owner when car was restored. I was told by the previous owner that they put a pommy front panel on the car, that probably answers your question Hanra and i just checked
and it does have the hole in it on the passenger side. Easiest way to describe the hole PhilB, would be , it sort of looks a bit like a teardrop with one straight side.

Goodie.

Ok, Hanra, not sure if this is the hole you mean but there is a small hole that looks thru to the arch, it has been used (incorrectly I guess) to fix the grill which is why the paint is all marked.

There's another one the other side in the same spot.

Here are pics of the front panel and the also the clearances that occur at partial lock that I am concerned about esp. on the passenger side.

Its unlikely that 6" inch wheels will result in the same track as standard wheels. And yes rubbing on the front corner is quite common. 12 and 13 inch wheels usually require trimming of the front end of the guard although this is not necessary if standard wheel offsets are retained.

While you can reduce the effect by increasing caster but of course this has other consequences. And, of course, you can't change the caster with standard arms.

6" wheels are just a PITB...IMHO

Cheers, Ian

No looks like yours might be an original apron. Dare say you will need to do some body work choping to get some clearance.

This is the hole in the Rover apron panels.

Ah ha, understood. Now I realise I've seen that before. Thanks

Little bit hard to see for sure, but it appears the wheels have too much off-set out. Raise your suspension a wee bit or do some panel beating.

That's the thing, by my measurements my wheels have an offset of 10mm.

Looking at some of the common 6x10s here http://www.minispares-online.co.uk/index.php?cat_id=1&sub_cat_id=17 they are all more offset than mine.

My Widened steels are +10
Minitors (which I like) are +6,
Revolutions are +5,
Ultalites are -3

My suspension is pretty high already (see pic), guess I'll need to have a closer look at the panel.

Have others with 6x10s had to alter the front edge of the guard near the level of the bumper?

Got 6" Mambas on stock Cooper S and did get rubbing on right guard - where flares are welded on. Just stuck another finger worth of hydro pressure, and no probs........

My 10x6s have -15 offset and have the same clearance issues when super low and going up or down a driveway at an angle, I've also cut my guards out a bit as well.

I haven't cut my guards yet but don't really see any other option (other than changing to a different offset). Raising the ride height looks naff.
