Post subject: | Timing Marks on Flywheel |
Hi, I have recently bought a timing light and thought that I would try to do the timing on my mini. I have it all set up and working though i cannot see the timing marks on the flywheel. I am using a mirror and can see the pip on the housing, though I am buggared if I can see the 1/4 on any markings on the flywheel as described in the manuals. HELP! I have a 1275cc engine (non-S). Does anyone know what the timing should be set to, as different manuals have different degrees BTDC. Thanks Rocco |

I am not sure what the timing is for a 1275 non S, but on our Mini K I have put a fine white paint line on the flywheel indicating where the correct timing mark is, with the white line on the flywheel the light picks up the white mark quite easily. You need a fine little brush and just put a mark adjacent to the correct line when you decide what the corect timing is, you also need the motor idling pretty slow as well. Hope this helps. |

I marked my flywheel while i had it all apart ![]() i also marked the harmonic balancer and timing cover to make it a little easier ![]() if you are unable to fine the mark, you will have to remove a spark plug and use a screwdriver to find when either number 1 or number 4 are on top dead centre. then look through the hole and see if you can see it then. check your harmonic balancer or pulley and see if that is marked. if not i am not sure how you will find it on the flywheel. is it possible for the flywheel to be upside down? |

Not with the 1 piece flywheel- but the early one is bolted to a steel centre, it can be assembled 6 ways, only one of which is correct. Could be the flywheel has been lightened- that wipes all the marks out. I use a TDC mark on the timing cover and pulley instead, and a dialback timing light. |

If you can't find them, make sure the ignition is off, pop it in 4th gear with the handbrake off and slowly rock the car forward watching the flywheel slowly turn, with the aid of a mirror and torch hopefully you can find them, they can be a bit hard to see on some cars. Once you have found them mark with a dab of white paint. |
