Post subject: | Cost of blasting a whole shell |
I read all the threads I can on the pros & cons of each different method of stripping the paint off a car. Thaught I was going to soda blast the mini but i think ive now decided media blasting would be the better way to go. I have had a couple of my local guys come around to quote and I am a little confused at the difference in price. I have asked all three to quote on the same thing; - Remove all paint from visible parts. Entire boot and under bonet. - Prime the whole shell so it can sit in the shed for as long as it takes for me to get the cash together to have it repaired and sprayed. The quotes have come back; - $400 --> $500 to blast and ~$200- to prime. TO - $1500 --> $1600 for the whole job. (Shouldnt be any more than that mate!) I cant say that any of the guys look overly professional, and all were refered by 'car' people i know. Does anyone else have any recent experience with costs? Thanks Shane |

I had a few soda blasted and prices are based on time spent on the job. Inside, outside, undernieth, doos, boot lid and bonnet ~$1200 to $1900. But usually you get what you pay for. I was very happy with what I got. |

I had mine "sand" blasted with garnet and was very happy. I had stripped most of the paint and the sealant off and wanted the rusty bits cleaned up and then it was sprayed with an etch primer. I think from memory it was $500.00. and done at Brookvale. |

800 for glass bead blasting inside and out, doors, boot and bonnet and extra subframe. Primed in 2k Watyl Superetch. Was done near Northcote in Melbourne. This price was on the premise that I deliver and pick up from their workshop however. |

Had my van blasted and primed last year for $600 out in NW VIC. ..although they had it for MONTHS before they did anything with it. Hindsight I would have booked a specific day/time to get them to do it, and the day before hand gone over all the spots i could get to myself with a seaweed (quick strip) disc and sent it to them with only the pillars/enginebay/tricky spots for them to blast and then get them to paint the whole thing. Mainly so I could have got a better idea of what condition it is truely in, there were a couple of bogged up rusty spots they didn't completely clean up. Also would have been just slightly cheaper. |

Moke maybe... A mini is more like $2500+ for soda (thats a mini with the original paint) <edit> but other places have quoted substantially more for mini's. Sometimes as much as the cost of painting the car! Another one to look into is Peanut shell. Thats also popular, I've had no personal experience with it but some guys swear by it. |

Thanks everyone. I guess you do get what you pay for! Im always a little wary up here as there is an odd mentality amongst businesses. 'They can afford it' and 'we are the only show in town!'. Im still struggling to decide, procrastination is a disease... Morris 1100 wrote: $1400 to get my shell blasted with plastic grit.
Michael, who did you use to have yours done with plastic? Tah Shane |
