I am going to swap out my 998 with an 1100. The donor motor is fresh and complete with box, diff and everything else. I have borrowed an endless chain hoist and was wondering how/where i should attach the chains to pull the old motor and also drop in the new? Is there some special hook gizmo I should purchase? Can I just hoist it by putting the chain links through the rocker cover retaining nuts? If worst comes to worst I might just sling some rope under the box? Thanks |

try to do it from the block not the head. use spare bolts in case you bend them slightly. screw them in all the way so you dont break your thread on your block, and lift away. crack the right top ball joint on the left front wheel so you have some play in the shafts if you have cups on your diff. Makes getting the motor in and out really easy. |

Ok, Thanks. I was going to leave all the front hubs in situ but release the bottom ball joints and pull the drive shafts from the cups by yanking on the bottom of the hub, if that makes sense. |

once you have the motor out you can rejoin the ball joint and you can easily roll the car around, much less stuffing around. |

I have lifted dozens of these out over the years and have just used a rope, slung around either end of the motor and joined together in a loop above the centre of the rocker cover, hooked up to a block and tackle, bit of a wriggle here and there and out they come. Love a dollar for ever time I had the motor in and out of mine and the other Cooper S's that were in our group at the time. There were 4 of us that had S's and we always seemed to have one of them in bits. I guess a nice bracket and chain off the head bolts would be good, but we just never got around to making anything up. |

Most of the time I fit a chain of a few links on to the centre head stud. I would have done over 50 this way, never had an issue IF the engine has studs. You need the engine to tilt back as you lift to get the diff housing past the subframe and body. |

get a dynamo bracket from a generator car (cheap as) drill out the hole that is used to mount the dynamo so that you can fit a decent size D shackle. Bolt it to the front of the block using the 2 bolts usually used to mount your dynamo/alternator. Makes a great re-useable mounting point. Doesnt upset the head tension and has the benefit of causing the motor to rock backwards so when lifting it makes the diff clear the subframe easily. Dont ever use rope. Had a mate drop the engine using rope. Destroyed the front apron. |

Go to the how to section on here and look for engine lifting bracket. If you don't want to weld or distrust the strength of the welded D shackle, just drill a hole in the angle to attach a D shackle to. Then use your chain hoist (block and Tackle). |
