Post subject: | Winter storage advice |
As the topic suggests, what is the best way to store a car over the winter period, I have changed the oil and done the filter, filled all the grease nipples, and put it up on axle stands... Should I start it on a regular basis, so keep everything lubricated or doesn't it matter, for 3 months. I have a trickle feed attached to the battery, so thats covered.. I changed the coolant and flushed the system a couple of times. I run the A/C for an hour on a run to Geelong and back. Is there anything else that I should be doing to keep the car in tip tip nick. Now it had the cover over it and just sitting there. ![]() |

One of the things I would do is take the battery out of the car completely and put it on the trickle charger "out of the car". Batteries on charge make fumes and these fumes are corrosive and explosive. Make sure the battery is placed in a well ventilated area while hooked up to a switched on Charger. and never sit a battery directly on the ground, put it on a piece of old rubber mat or similar. And spray some WD 40 or INOX in the battery box while battery is out. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In all seriousness, this is actually a good thing to do, move some air through the car to stop it rusting. |

I'd go with what Convertible said and remove the battery, the fumes really are bad. To prevent any condensation inside when i store a car i get those moisture absorbent things and put one inside the car and one in the boot, the refills for them are pretty cheap. I also put them on my lathes with a tarp over when not in use to stop surface rust. Car covers are good unless you have cats, then they just cause more scratches ![]() |

Silica gel, they come in packets like teabags, and feel like coarse salt. Put heaps in... I use them inside the MIG welder to stop my 12 year old 15kg coil of wire from rusting. ![]() If they eventually get damp, put em on a tray in the oven @120C for an hour or so then re-use. |

I'd suggest some Caution here. There is a General Caution out regarding Silica Gel and in particular Drying out this way. There is a concern that it maybe Carcinogenic as far as I am aware, this concern is still unproven, however the wider industry is moving away from using it. |
