When it comes to coils, is coils aint coils. i had a GT40 die on sunday. After all the weekend of work got out on the road, tuned the car up, was running beautifully. Planned an outing on Sunday afternoon with some mates. Got out of the driveway and everything died. Coil had popped, blown, died. Everything except a spark at the plug. So, whats a good coil. Is a GT40 Oil Filled Red one good enough Why would i choose a different one What kills them (this was new when i left brisbane 15,000km/two years ago) |

I've used GT40's with minimal problems, generally find BOSCH product good. Leaving your ignition on with power to the coil will kill them prematurely.. |

If it was the later type GT40 (epoxy filled `transformer' style) some people (particularly racers) have had trouble with em. The old red oil filled GT40 is a better coil IMO, but Supercrap no longer carry them. Maybe are superseded now, I dunno. They still carry the oil filled GT40-R, but you need a ballast resistor too. |

are the new epoxy ones still red. i have always used the red oil filled gt40 coils. Im tempted to try one of these gold lucas ones that a certain supplier sells for $60 my GT40 could all be good if it turns out to be the damn ignition switch. |

They are available from Repco last I checked. |

Robbos had them too, but more expensive. Drexxle, the new epoxy GT40 ones are still red but are plastic cased, and different shape, similar to those on modern cars. They are called `GT40T'. |

Vibrations can also damage coils i believe. Perhaps the long haul over shoddy roads did something to it? And as Mini Mad said if you leave the ignition on they get too hot if your not driving around. |

vibrations, im picking up good vibrations..... that oodnadatta, sheesh,. shook the needle off my speedo (destroyed the spring inside the speedo), shook my windows loose, destroyed the ball joints, smashed trailing arm, cones and so on. and im rebuilding the car to do it all again on the Tanami Track. |

God knows why BMC put all their coils on the engine, who else does? I now mount mine on the inner guard, where they don't cop engine vibes, and stay dry too. |

the owner of william creek said to me, he had always seen mokes pass through but he had never seen a mini. he walked inside, grabbed his camera, and took a photo of my car in front of the fuel bowsers. I wonder if a Mini has ever been to Wolf Creek, i know a moke has. |

Lucas is the Prince of Darkness, I would stick with Bosch in preference. |
