I was told that chrome locks in heat. Dont know if this is true or not.
If this is true, then a "bit" of chrome is okay, but too much could cause problems.

The plater will clean whatever need to be cleaned prior to plating in nasty chemicals so I wouldn't worry about the black build up on the inside of the unit (although the quote might go up if it is really ordinary).
Did some of those rocker covers with breathers have steel wool stuffed inside a cannister? The rocker covers with the large breather mounted along the rear side of the top? If it does, it might be disintergrated to little lumps by the acid process and need to be cleaned out before and replaced after.

I wouldn't worry about heat retention, the mini is a water cooled lump. I think it will be whatever temperature the water jacket is plus a small margin no matter what the rocker cover is..

Personal-I like a bit of chrome(I think it's a 70's thing and it reminds me of my younger years). Not too much, just a bit here and there :D

So what sort of cost are we talking when it comes to chroming a rocker cover?

The rocker cover on my car has been chrome plated and has been fine for YEARS. I would get a rocker cover chromed again in a flash.
