Anyone know if the universal type flywheel puller (sold in Supercheap) will do for a mini flywheel ? |

If it's similar to the universal harmonic balance puller, then NO. It takes TONS of force to pull a Mini flywheel off its taper (usually). Mine is 20mm thick plate, with a 1" UNF bolt and welded nut, and 3 Grade 8 bolts. Many Mini flywheel pullers I've seen are just toys..!

Yes it is the one you mentioned. Is it worth a go though cos i've got one and need to do the clutch tommorow. |

Sean...do a search here on flywheel and be careful...they can let go with a bang and fly off on an unsuspecting foot etc |

sean, if that puller is a bronze/goldy colour "Y" shaped thing.... youre gonna get mad.... I believe it is 5mm too short in each direction. It just_wont_fit. 6mm steel plate just bends like plastic - been there, done that. Find some 20mm plating as doc says.... its the only safe way. |

No the puller is too small so am hiring one from Minicraft (Perth). have got it all to bits up to pulling the flywheel off. just one question, It says make sure the groove is in the horizontal position on the crankshaft, but I can't see this, only a big slot accross the centre of the flywheel, I have loosened the flywheel nut, i am concerned about the horizontal position issue cos i have heard it is bad if you get it wrong, Hope this all makes sense ? |

Put it at TDC on #1 cylinder if you must.... 
BTW it is all bull these days- the early flywheels (pre-`63) had an oil seal in them, and the C-washer could fall in and jam. Since 1963 there is nothing there, no seal.. so it doesn't matter. But countless reprints of workshop manuals continue to mention it.

I have a puller made from the middle of a 2 piece mini flywheel, it's a bit agricultural but it is very strong and works fine. But as mentioned before they can come off with a bang. If you are desperate a strong bit of wood and a big hammer thru the starter motor hole work ok, just need to rotate the crankshaft every couple of hits. Always wondered why you had to put the slot horizontal, now i know, thanks Dr. Steve |

I suppose it is worth changing the engine mount on that side while I am at it ? How can i tell if the old one is ok or not ? |

Put it at TDC on #1 cylinder - what does this mean and how do I do it ? Take out No 1 spark plug. Turn the engine over (put in 4th gear and push) until piston is at top of bore (TDC= Top Dead Centre) check by poking a Biro or pencil or whatever down the plug hole. No you don't need to... Sean |
