Post subject:  Light blue ish exhaust smoke - causes?

car started blowing serious amounts of exhaust smoke today. Ok at idle but under acceleration lots of bluish smoke. Haven't checked much yet other than oil cap which looks ok in terms of no white stuff. Wil probably take it to mini classic this week anyway but just thought I'd ask what's likely. Is it just mixture or something more serious?

Usually, light blue smoke = oil burning.
Usually, under power = it's coming up past the rings.
Usually, only after starting up cold or at bottom of a hill = its coming down the valve guides.
However, this is only a general view, there are exceptions to the rule.

How many miles has the engine done, and how long since it's had a valve job?

Completely new (rebuilt) engine in 2005. No particular work done since internally that I can recall.

Been reading up, things like piston rings and valve seals and so on, huh? Probably out of my capabilities in terms of diagnosis. I'll give Greig a call on Monday and see when I can get up to Ermington. God I wish there was a mini mechanic closer to me :(

Easy to fix, should take all of about 10 minutes. Drain the oil out

did you do an oil change. what oil did you put in. its not to thin or to thick is it. It is mineral based and not synthetic.

Might also be worth having a compression test on it to make sure the piston rings are good.

talking about the light blue smoke;
What would be the reason to see smoke under fast cornering only?

Tyre smoke?

no not from the tyres, coming from exhaust (I think oil) but then stops. Only when I am cornering too fast.

i noticed my engine blowing some blue smoke this morning. on startup and when taking off from a stand still.

the smoke disappears when the engine revs or is under load at rpm.

this would be valve stem seals yeh?

i have the early oring type valve stem seals. should these seal ok? engine only done just over 1000 kms from new.

i should have upgraded the guides to suit the later hat type valve stem seals.

may have to pull the head and do that i think.

Firstly check that it`s not OVER-Full with oil

too much oil & they don`t like it ,,, & they tell you that by smoking

but otherwise maybe a piston ring problem

you don`t have a brake booster (servo) fitted do you???

My oil level is okey and I do have brake booster.
I first seen the smoke today when I was flying through corners up the multideck carpark in Crown

If only visible on long LH bends it could be oil flung up the flywheel housing breather by the primary gear.
Mine used to do that, when the Cooper S PCV valve used to stick open.

interesting that this thread was dug up.

my problem that kicked off this thread was that the Brake Master Cylinder was leaking into the brake booster and then the fluid was being sucked up in to the manifold and burning off!

Thanks drmini,
that might be the case because on the way back yesterday I did not see any smoke at all. I think I will stop cornering that fast now.
